Kayvion Lewis brought the smooth storytelling magic again to Heist Royale, the exciting sequel to Thieves’ Gambit. It has been a few months since the explosive showdown of Ross’s gambit with THE ORGANIZATION. Devroe and her mother have both tried to earn forgiveness for their betrayal. I especially like how Ross tries to get Devroe arrested as a birthday present to herself. Her level of snark and suaveness make this book hard to put down.
Things get put into high gear when The Baron tries to usurp The Count as leader of the organization. A new gambit to determine the next leader is set into motion and Ross and Devroe are on opposite teams. Ross is in an especially precarious position because if The Baron wins only, she will be spared and her whole family will be murdered. She can’t expect The Count not to agree to Devroe’s mother’s request to have her family killed either.
This book is perfect for action and adventure fans in this Ocean’s Eleven style of high-stakes heists and thrilling evasions from danger. Ross does grow as a character by realizing that she needs to distance herself from her mother’s toxic personality and learn how to be a better friend now that she has them. My favorite part is her banter with Devroe, which could have been a bigger part of the story.
Overall, this was an excellent sequel. I like that this story was wrapped up with an opening for further books in the future. The action was smooth and exciting. I only wish to see more time spent on the relationship between Ross and her friends, especially with Devroe, if there are future books.
