Usually, I write long review on how much I enjoy a book or how I didnt enjoy a book - but with this. . .I dont really know what to say.  On one hand, P.C. Cast made her main character (see - the characters name didnt even stick with me. . .was it Zoey?) an elementalist - which I adore.  Not to mention that her spin on vampires is unique and rather cool.

Perhaps it was just P.C. Casts style that made reading Marked so. . .unremarkable.   I can remember key points in the plot - but no names.  Nothing, actually, besides the fact that theres a school, some rituals to appease spirits, the main characters priestess abilities (by that I mean her elemental powers), a gay kid that I liked (again - no name. . .), and a trashy girl-villain.

All in all, I cant recommend this book to much of anyone.  I might reread it again, to see if anything really sticks. . . But until then, I can only give this book a dull two stars.

In 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres not only exist but are also tolerated by humans. Those whom the creatures "mark" as special enter the House of Night school where they will either become vampyres themselves, or, if their body rejects the change, die. To Zoey, being marked is truly a blessing, though she's scared at first. She has never fit into the human world and has always felt she is destined for something else. Her grandmother, a descendant of the Cherokee tribe, has always supported her emotionally, and it is she who takes the girl to her new school. But even there the teen stands apart from the others. Her mark from the Goddess Nyx is a special one, showing that her powers are very strong for one so young. At the House of Night, Zoey finds true friendship, loyalty, and romance as well as mistrust and deception. She realizes that all is not right in the vampyre world and that the problems she thought she left behind exist there as well. (Yeah, I admit - Amazon helped me a bit with this summary.)

~~~
While I do admit to the premise being interesting, despite the basic Harry Potter spin (Kid despises family, whisked away to magical school), this book is by far the worst vampyre (or, as the authors prefer, vampyre) novel I have ever, in my entire life, had the misfortune of reading. I would describe it as one of the more unfortunate instalments of Gossip Girl, except all the dialogue is unrealistic and all the characters are vampyres. But wait! They don't drink blood to create new vampyres. Instead, they appear at random places and moments of time and create these 'fledglings' by saying a corny incantation which makes a blank crescent moon appears on some kids forehead. Yeah. That's what happens.
Let's look at the horrible inner and outer dialogue:
  1. Overuse of the whole "out-of-quotation" exclamation mark ("Quote", imagine how silly that would be!) - I don't know why, but it bugs me. A lot.
  2. Use of the words 'yummy' and 'hateful'. Again, these are teenagers, like, 17 year olds. I have not said 'yummy' since I was seven, and I don't know anyone who uses 'hateful' in everyday conversation.
  3. Painfully corny, down to the facial expressions.
  4. It's a mother-daughter writing team. Need I say more?
  5. It could basically pass as a long children's book, if it weren't for the clumsy addition of stereotypical gay placement.
In addition, the character development is like a bad piece of fan fiction. The main protagonist's shaky narrative is only stood-off by the misplaced addition of extremely detailed description of her Cherokee facial features and annoyingly cheesy vampyric rituals. She seems to be unable to describe the world around her unless she's staring into a mirror or discussing all the guys she could screw, which might just be the ultimate example of ego brushing, if I've ever seen one.
Another thing you might notice is that people are mentioned that you'd think would be important, such as Zoey's biological brother and sister. They are referred to once in the first novel as a junior and senior, one's a cheerleader who gets around and one's a meat-headed jock, and that's the end of it. Not even on the oh-so irksome 'Parent Day' are they mentioned. You'd think something like this would be explored upon, but maybe the two authors just sort of hoped their readers would forget about it.
And, if none of this were enough, apparently every celebrity you love (or hate) are---wait for it---VAMPYRES as well. Very publicly so. Every genius in history, every country singer, every socialite. All. Vampyres. Again, the writing duo seems to think that misplaced, awkward pop-culture references will make up for their lack of personal and social skills.
Overall, it could have been written by a sensually depraved, teen drama obsessed sixteen year old. It might have been something far more enjoyable, but alas, in "Marked", P.C. and Kristen disappoint (for three more novels, might I add). It's a nice idea, but not nice enough to actually waste time on.
 Wow this book was so awesome I didn't want it to end.From the first page I was sucked in. It was like Harry Potter but vampires..and sooo much more sophisticated. This mother and daughter team really know how to write a book! I am absolutely in LOVE with main character Zoey. Ever since becoming "marked" she becomes this strong-take-no-mess-from-no-one type of girl. She's not intimidated by Aphrodite who's considered the school bully with goddess powers. She plays her cards right and always consults the goddess Nyx before making any moves. And to think..all she was ever hoping for was to fit in. She didn't fit in, but made her own path.I can't wait to read the rest of this series.
Zoey is marked as a vampire and sent to the House of Night (sort of a Hogwarts for vampires).  She shows signs of extraordinary talents and makes friends with other vampires-in-training.  In the meantime, she begins a feud with another student in the House of Night, agrees to a date with a sexy/secretly geeky vampire, and tries to avoid her human ex-boyfriend.
This was a quick read combining vampire legends with goddess worship.  There is a clear anti-Christian undertone, and the frequent pop culture references already seem dated even though the book is only two years old.  While Zoey is very moral and seems to make good choices, other characters engage in sex, drinking, and smoking pot.  A lot of Twilight fans are interested in other vampire stories.  However, this is missing the romantic innocence that made Twilight so thrilling; sometimes less description is more rewarding.
i thought this book was a buildup for thigns to come. it was not as fast paced as the first two and probably only took place over the course of two days. it was slightly disappointing compared to the other two and had you wondering only two questions..when will they forgive her and is she going to give up on guys? it was an okay book that could probably keep one busy for an hour or three but nothing to major.
This was such an AWESOME BOOK!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!! I love the whole series. The plot and the characters rocked!
Zoey Redbird gets Marked at school and has to go to The House of Night, a vampyre vinishing school. Once she gets there she realizes she is special. She is the only fledgling in history to have a filled in crescent moon on her forhead. She is very special. She meets her new roomate Stevie Rae Johnson, who is definitely a big okie! When the go to dinner, she introduces Zoey to the group of kids named Shaunee, Erin, and Damien. They all become friends but then Zoey gets invited to the Dark Daughter Ritual which is lead by a "hateful hag from hell" named Aphrodite La fonte. Nobody likes her but Zoey takes her up on the offer. She goes to the ritual and thought it was horrible and ran out when it was over and Eric came to help her. Eric is a really sweet guy and totally hot and Zoey finds herself getting into a relationship with him. They become BF/GF and he walks her back to her dorm.  Zoey tells Stevie Rae everything that happened and then they went to bed. The next day (night) was Zoey's first night of school. Day and night are flipped there. She has a good time and then starts to worry about the next Dark Daughters Ritual which turned out to be a mess. Aphrodite got them mixed into this mess with ghosts and knocked out security guards to a museum and that is when Zoey uses her power which is to provoke the five elements to make them go away.  The High Prestiess, Neferet, says that Zoey is then the leader of the Dark Daughter. Zoey feels pain on her forhead and come to find out that she has a tattoo on her forhead. She tries to convince Aphrodite that they can be friends but Aphrodite doesn't buy it.
It was a really good book and i advise anyone at all to read it.
Very good book! at first i was scared for her also that she got marked and didnt know what to do or how to tell her parents...and even her boyfriend and his friends were afraid of her when she got marked! then she saw the goddess nyx. And she specially marked zoey! And zoey got special powers that no other fledgling has! then there is a change that everyone has to go threw to actually become a "vampyre" as they spell it. and theres a group of dark daughters and the worst girl is the leader. then a kid dies because he didnt make the change. And he comes back and sorta haunts zoey. Then in the end the leader of dark daughters messes up and zoey becomes leader...thats just to make it short! hahaha
in the book house of night book :marked i like how the auther put her own type of vampyre myth. In the book it sounds like you dont get bit rather you get marked by there goddess and not everyone can undergo the transformation but the story is a great read and i have just finnished the book and about to go and buy book two. Granted  that this book is more for older teens cause it does have it parts that are very sexual and descriptive but overall again a great read for all reader that like vampyre books
This book really captured my attention from the begining. Zoey is a very strong female, but still gets confused like every other teen girl. Eric seems to be a jerk at first, but the attraction between he and Zoey is too strong to deny. Aphrodite is just anasty mean vampire. the perfect mean girl. the book keeps you wanting more and you feel connected to Zoey as if you were her. Once you are introduced to this series, you never want to go back.
I loved this book for so many reasons. First the main character is so funny and down to earth you can defianately comprohend where shes coming from in most of all the whole book. Each characters unique personality is so fun. Its the book for you if you like witty and charming remarks. This book is high school life and quite entertaing. She teaches you along the way that being a strong person means following your heart :)
