About the Book: Stopping the Shots

Is there room in a family for two hockey stars? In this companion book to Taking the Ice, goalie Mike Krieger (aka Tree) takes centre stage. Although Mike is known to be calm and collected, his home life is more difficult than it seems. His younger brother, Eric, is a hockey hotshot, already playing on the top U13 team. And their parents are so focused on Eric’s game that Mike’s success in net is barely noticed — except by his older brother, Liam, who was born with Down syndrome and is Mike’s biggest fan. Mike’s parents dismiss a suggestion that he could be good enough to attend a top goalie camp, and while Mike is used to living in Eric’s shadow, the tension between the two brothers increases when Mike is asked to play goal for Eric’s team. When an accident threatens Eric’s hockey career, and money troubles threaten his parents’ farm, Mike worries he might also have to give up the sport he loves. He decides to risk his reputation — and more — for the new goalie pads he desperately needs. But when the truth comes out, can Mike find a way to make things right?

YABC: Who is your favorite character in the book?
I am extremely fond of my main character Mike (he has a nickname, and it is Tree) because he is thoughtful but yet makes mistakes too, but I really like his older brother, Liam. Liam was born with Down syndrome and plays a big role in the novel. He adds some humor and it is extremely likeable.
YABC: What scene in the book are you most proud of, and why?
There’s a family dinner scene at the end that I loved writing. It is very emotional and Liam, the oldest brother, plays a big role.  I loved how the three brothers resolved their differences, and the parents come to many realizations as well.
YABC:  What came first, the concept, landscape, characters, or something else?
The landscape for this book came first which is totally unusual for me. Normally, I begin with a character but for this book it was the prairie setting.
YABC: If you could only write one genre for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Oh gosh, I write in a lot of genres so I can’t answer that question.
YABC:   How do you keep your ‘voice’ true to the age category you are writing within?
That is a really good question. I listen to kids talk and I also try to think like a kid.
YABC:   What can readers expect to find in your books?
Strong sports action (kids like the fast clip of the sports scenes), characters that are believable, strong family members, strong friendships, and, hopefully, a little humor.
YABC: What is your favorite snack when writing?
I love peanut M&M’s. And those mini-Easter Eggs. Once I bought the big bag at Costco and ate them all. Not good.
YABC:   What’s up next for you?
I have a lot of projects on the go! I have a female sport middle grade novel coming out in the spring of 2025, another book in my Amazing Hockey Series on Auston Matthews. But the biggest news is…I just signed a contract to write a story about Manny, and he is one of the teammates in Stopping The Shots. I’m so excited. I just love his character.
YABC: What is your favorite holiday or tradition and why?
Christmas is my favorite holiday because it is about family for me. Family is something that is often featured in my books. I think it is so important.
