Welcome to the second cover reveal of the week, YABCers!

Today we’re celebrating the cover for IN A HANDFUL OF DUST by Mindy McGinnis releasing September 23, 2014 from Katherine Tegen/HarperCollins. Before we get to the cover, here’s a message from Mindy:

Hello YABC readers! Welcome to the official cover reveal for IN A HANDFUL OF DUST, which is a companion novel to my debut NOT A DROP TO DRINK. The amazingly talented Erin Fitzsimmons at HarperCollins was once again my cover artist, and she came up with something that I think illustrates this book’s relationship to DRINK very well. You’ll notice that it coordinates nicely, but the colors at work here are wildly different. I think that’s a great approach for a book that serves as a companion novel rather than a sequel. Hats off to Erin and all of her talent!

About the Book

The only thing bigger than the world is fear.

Lucy’s life by the pond has always been full. She has water and friends, laughter and the love of her adoptive mother, Lynn, who has made sure that Lucy’s childhood was very different from her own. Yet it seems Lucy’s future is settled already—a house, a man, children, and a water source—and anything beyond their life by the pond is beyond reach.

When disease burns through their community, the once life-saving water of the pond might be the source of what’s killing them now. Rumors of desalinization plants in California have lingered in Lynn’s mind, and the prospect of a “normal” life for Lucy sets the two of them on an epic journey west to face new dangers: hunger, mountains, deserts, betrayal, and the perils of a world so vast that Lucy fears she could be lost forever, only to disappear in a handful of dust.

In this companion to Not a Drop to Drink, Mindy McGinnis thrillingly combines the heart-swelling hope of a journey, the challenges of establishing your own place in the world, and the gripping physical danger of nature in a futuristic frontier.

Air five for books about water that will kill you! Best tertiary sub genre there is! Also I like how the book cover is in the same vein as Not A Drop to Drink to make it clear they are connected, and further brand awareness.

  15. Monique says:

First of all, the cover is so cool. The colours and overall composition draw me in. And I’m not gonna lie, the cover is usually what makes me pick up a book in the first place. I would definitely pick this one up. Second of all, I have not yet read Not a Drop to Drink, (it’s on my to-read list though) but now I really want to! Lastly, the synopsis is awesome. Who doesn’t love adventures, and betrayal, and danger all in a dystopian YA novel? I know I certainly do!

  16. Stacy Hoyt says:

I think the cover is a perfect companion to Not A Drop To Drink and I am eager to read what happens next. So glad you decided to do a follow up story.

  17. Christina Rudd says:

  18. Nicole says:

I was very surprised to learn there would be a sequel/companion novel because I thought “Not a Drop to Drink” ended definitely.

However, I’m very excited! I enjoyed Lynn and am glad I don’t have to let her go yet. The cover fits in with the first, and it’s nice to finally see what Lynn sees from her homestead. In the first, we remain very close to her land…now we’ll get to see the rest of this future world.

  19. Matthew says:

I’m extremely excited for this book — I loved the first and can’t wait to see what happens next. The synopsis seems to be bringing up the logical next step for us to learn about the world and the cover is gorgeous and dangerous looking.

I love the cover. While quite similar to the cover of Not A Drop To Drink, it has it’s differences, like the smoke and the mountains that make it just as intriguing.

The synopsis is well written and gives testament to how well written the story will be. Mindy McGinnis did such an awesome job of writing her 1st book from cover to cover that I’m sure this book will be no different. I can’t wait to read about Lucy and Lynn. 🙂

  32. The synopsis sounds pretty cool, definitely filled with danger and conflict. And I like the cover, but I kind of wish they had either continued the sitting in dirt look used on “OF” with “DIRT.” DIRT looks like it’s floating about right now, and I like the perspective look when the letters are grounded. Still, very cool looking!

  33. It sounds awesome…and the cover fits amazingly with Not a Drop to Drink!
