Hi, YABCers!

Today we’re super excited to celebrate the cover reveal for Ultimatum, releasing March 7, 2017 from Sourcebooks Fire.

Before we get to the cover, here’s a note from K.M. Walton:

Hello, YABC! Welcome to the exclusive cover reveal for ULTIMATUM. I have spent wayyyyy too much time staring at my cover. Not gonna lie, there may have been drool involved. I am bursting with excitement to share not only the incredible cover but also a little about the book itself.

At its core ULTIMATUM is about two things: choices and family.

Oscar and Vance are brothers who barely tolerate each other. Oscar is an artist who never goes anywhere without a sketchpad in hand. Actually, he doesn’t really go anywhere—his social life is non-existent. He’s constantly lost in his own thoughts or his beloved classical music. He’s a self-described loner, and if you ask him he’ll say he’s completely okay with that. Disappearing into his artwork and music makes him feel happy, safe, alive.

But the truth is he’s not happy. See, Oscar feels things deeply and privately, always privately. His alcoholic father and life-of-the-party-brother, Vance, couldn’t be more opposite. He’s disrespected, misunderstood, and bullied by both.

Vance is an accomplished lacrosse player with an active social life. Everyone adores him. Everyone but Oscar, at least. Even though the brothers are only thirteen months apart in age they have spent their teen years at each other’s throats.

Vance doesn’t get Oscar, his secretive artwork, or his weird music. Not at all. Vance loves working at their father’s reggae bar in town, partying with his best friend Growler, and playing lacrosse. His dream is to go pro. And when he lands a full ride to Division I Drexel University life is great, but not for long.

Oscar’s chapters take place in the hospice, where their father is days away from dying. Vance’s chapters start out three years prior so the reader can see how the family fell apart.

Will the brothers be able to set aside their differences? Can they survive their painfully uncertain future?

Choices must be made.

ULTIMATUM plunges into the intricacies of family life, investigating the ways we fail each other and finding grace in the moments when we find our way back home.

Now that you know what ULTIMATUM is about, wait until you see how S P O T  O N/B R I L L I A N T the cover is. If you drool, too,

I won’t tell anyone ; )

About the Book:

It’s not Oscar’s fault he’s misunderstood. Ever since his mother died, he’s been disrespected and bullied by his self-absorbed older brother, so he withdraws from his fractured family, seeking refuge in his art.

Vance wishes his younger brother would just loosen up and be cool. It was hard enough to deal with their mother’s death without Oscar getting all emotional. At least when Vance pushes himself in lacrosse and parties, he feels alive.

But when their father’s alcoholism sends him into liver failure, the two brothers must come face-to-face with their demons-and each other- if they are going to survive a very uncertain future.

“Wow, wow, wow. I am blown away by ULTIMATUM! I found this a powerful book—every minute of it was so painfully real. K.M. speaks her characters’ deep emotional truths.”

James Howe, bestselling author of THE MISFITS

I love this cover so very much and because this book have multiple POV’s I find that this will be a much more interesting read unlike a book from just one. Anyways, even though the broken family thing is a little cliche I love seeing the spin author’s put on the typical cliche.

My kids love to play Rock Paper Scissors. That’s the perfect way to symbolize sibling rivalry and ways they solve it. The summary has me intrigued. I think we all know about families who experience situations like this.

I just bought Empty by this author on a whim at Ollie’s yesterday not knowing anything about it. Now that I’ve read this page and realize it’s the same author who wrote this new book Ultimatum, I’m going to read Empty tonight! Ultimatum sounds like such a good story, and kids can really relate to books about sibling rivalry.
