Jelly Boy tells the story of a jellyfish who has unfortunately fallen in love with a plastic boy that she believes is a jelly boy. Jelly Boy is different from the other jelly boys around, but by the time Jelly girl discovers the truth about her new friend it might be too late to rescue herself.

What I liked: The title and the cover of this book caught my attention and I was interested in what story this book would tell. I appreciate the way the author talks about conservation in a fun manner with language that is appropriate for a younger audience.

I love the art in this book and it isn’t obvious that this is a plastic bag that the jelly girl has fallen in love with from the start. When I first opened the book I was under the impression that this jelly boy was a different type of jellyfish or other marine life, therefore I was surprised and intrigued to see where the story would go once I learned it was a plastic bag. I love that it wasn’t until we learned about the danger that this mysterious jelly boy poses that I began to see that this was a plastic bag.

Final Verdict: Jelly Boy is a great way to introduce conservation to children and have a discussion about the plastic that is affecting our oceans. Children will be fascinated by the images in this book as they learn about the dangers of pollution in our oceans. Adults will also enjoy reading this book as they gain new ways to bring up the topic of conservation with younger audiences.
