About This Book:

In this cozy picture book set on Christmas Eve, the Five Little Monkeys are sure that every little noise they hear is Santa—and of course they have to jump out of bed each time to investigate! Will they ever go to sleep?

“He won’t visit while you’re still awake, so go back to bed, for goodness’ sake!”

It’s Christmas Eve, and the Five Little Monkeys are so excited, they can’t sleep. Not even Mama’s and Grandpa’s warnings can keep them from jumping out of bed again and again to look for Santa! Will those silly little monkeys find a way to get a glimpse of him and his sleigh before the night is over?

Beloved, best-selling picture book creator Eileen Christelow perfectly captures all the excitement and cozy anticipation of Christmas in this warm holiday story.

Cute holiday read

FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS LOOKING FOR SANTA is a cute and silly holiday read. The five little monkeys are having trouble sleeping – they cannot wait for Santa! When they hear a noise in the kitchen, they go to check if it is Santa – but it is just Grandpa, who sends them back to bed with a cookie. Then, they hear a noise down the hall with someone in the bathroom – but this time it’s just their mother. Next, they hear a scratching on the roof. Once again, the monkeys go to check, climbing into the roof. It turns out to be just a branch, but their ladder blows over and they are trapped! How will they get back inside? Through the chimney, of course. After all these antics, they fall asleep – but that is when Santa comes! Will they catch a glimpse of him before he leaves?

What I loved: This was a cute and silly story about the monkeys trying to see Santa on Christmas Eve night. Children will empathize with the desire to catch sight of Santa and the difficulty sleeping with all the excitement of Christmas. The rhyming text adds some listening fun as the book is told in refrain. Combined with the colorful illustrations that capture these silly monkeys and their antics so well, this is a book that will work well for toddlers up through elementary school aged readers.

What left me wanting more: I would have rather the monkeys did not go up on the roof by themselves unsafely or back down the chimney (not a great example to set and may need some reinforcing for toddlers/preschoolers that we don’t use ladders by ourselves or go into the chimney – that is for Santa only!). As another small point, there is also a lot told in speech bubbles from the little monkeys that messes with the flow of the rhyming text, as it is hard to tell when exactly to read it.

Final verdict: A cute story of Christmas anticipation, FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS LOOKING FOR SANTA is a non-religious holiday read with plenty of bright colors and rhyming text that will appeal to young readers.
