Kids Review: Mr. Fox’s Game of No! (David LaRochelle)

About This Book:

In a hilarious interactive picture book, the Geisel Award–winning creators of See the Cat challenge kids to answer every question with “NO”—even when their brain keeps insisting “YES.”

Can you beat Mr. Fox at his Game of No? The rules are simple: every time he asks a question, you must respond with “NO.” If you accidentally say “YES,” then it’s back to the beginning of the book for you, where you must start all over again. Are you ready? (Oops!) Do you live on planet Earth? Are you stronger than a baby? What does Y-E-S spell? (Argh!) Kids will giggle uncontrollably as they gamely aim to avoid Mr. Fox’s clever traps—but just ask them if they’d like to read this book again, and they won’t be able to resist: “YES!”

David LaRochelle has created another wildly funny book, with Mr. Fox’s Game of “No!” The old adage is that ‘No’ is a toddler/preschool child’s favorite word but that idea gets turned around when Mr. Fox plays a game with the reader where all they have to say is “no” after every question but all they want to say is yes! The writing style and interactive nature of the story makes it fantastic for a read-aloud. Immediately after hearing the book for the first time, my reluctant reader said it was her turn to read it to everyone and insisted that this book was a keeper, and wanted to give it to others as gifts. A truly good children’s book is enjoyable beyond the intended age group and this book fits that perfectly. There were so many laugh-out-loud moments as my children tried to remember to say no, especially when asked if they were wearing underwear. This book is perfect for fans of The Book With No Pictures, This Book is Red, as well as the other books written by David LaRochelle. Be prepared to read this instant classic again and again.
