You don't have to be Australian to appreciate this story. Written in the style of the classics, this novel follows the life of young man Kipp and his developing relationship with girl-next-door Jane. When he isn't at home doing chores for his aging grandparents, Kipp is down at the local abandoned mines, exploring with his faithful dog Nip. But when Jane follows Kipp one night, a young love begins to blossom as they share the adventure together. Kipp is reluctant to allow a girl into his world at first, but Jane soon proves she is every bit as capable. This tale is full of mystery, adventure and even danger, with a sensitively told story, that will have you laughing one minute and in tears the next.

I found this a fascinating read. I wasn't sure at first if the style was deliberately classic, but as I read past the opening prologue and into the first few chapters, I realized there was a definite classic feel to this easy to read narrative. In my mind it brought back memories of Huckleberry Finn and other classics in the way this story is told. In an age dominated by grotesque zombies, vampire love triangles and werewolves, this is a welcome change and a rewarding read. Even though it is aimed at young readers aged from about 8 years, as an adult I was captivated by this book. As the story progresses, the themes become deeper and more meaningful and the author handles subjects like death and hardship with great sensitivity and care. Readers will be surprised by the ending, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I highly recommend it to all ages.
