In the biblical stories, Samson had great strength. The prophet Elijah outran a chariot. Today we would call these superpowers. In LAUNCH, a group of teens are given mysterious new abilities. They find themselves invited to the Launch Conference hosted by tech genius and billionaire Simon Mazor, a man with his own special abilities.

Demarcus Bartlett and Lily Beausoliel come from different worlds. When they meet at the conference, it becomes apparent they were invited for a reason. Demarcus can outrun cars. Lights behave strangely around Lily.

The question is, what will they do with their gifts?

This book was definitely unique. While I love reading other books about different mythologies and religions, I can't say I've read too many Christian inspired books. When I first read the synopsis to this book, I didn't realize it was based on the Christian religion. It's very relevant early on in the book and definitely has a strong theme surrounding it. I thought the blend of the modern world technology, superpowers, and the Divine power was fantastic. I did struggle overall with the actual pacing of the story. It never fully grasped my attention and it was very hard to stay interested. I believe this book is perfect for the audience it is intended for and if I was younger, I probably would have enjoyed this a lot more.

The characters were alright. They were what I expected them to be and didn't provide me with anything new. While I didn't hate them, personally, they weren't too memorable either. Again, I think that the teenagers reading this book will adore them, but as an adult, I didn't really click with them. They were well written for their age and I do think very relatable for their targeted audience.

Overall, as an adult Launch by Jason Joyner just wasn't for me. However, if I was an adult and looking for a book for teens and young adults - I would absolutely recommend this book. It is a great blend of the modern world with super powers and a strong Biblical message. I thought it was really well done to bring the points across and create something new. If you are a teen or young adult looking for a new adventure with a strong, purposeful message, definitely pick this one up!

This superhero tale is a lot of fun, with likeable characters, lots of action, and a thread of faith that complements but doesn't overwhelm the story. It raises interesting questions of what a person should do when given extraordinary gifts and makes you care about the characters and want them to choose well. This is the first in a series, and the story wraps up but leaves plenty open for exciting sequels. A great read for families and teens!
