With its positive message and community-centered story, this tale of a tree and the community that loves it will resonate with readers of all ages.
Some trees grow up wanting to be tall lighthouses or big red barns full of horses. Not Linden. He is grateful just being a tree. Through snowy winters full of caroling to summertime picnics beneath his shady boughs, Linden watches over the people who love and care for him.

Colleen Muske’s heartfelt, gorgeously illustrated ode to the simple joys of loving one’s community is full of childlike wonder and comfort in the many ways nature supports and surprises us.

Linden: The Story of a Tree is the perfect next read for fans of THE GIVING TREE by Shel Silverstein. Told from the tree’s perspective, Linden wants to be part of the construction of a barn like other trees, but soon appreciates all the ways the people interact and keep him company in the courtyard. The simple text allows the youngest readers to enjoy the gentle tone of this story. There is sadness when Linden passes on but there is a theme of renewal at the end to give readers an uplifting feeling of hope that nature finds a way to come again. The illustrations are well done and help to engage the reader in the story. This book would work well for preschool through elementary children.
