A travesty. A violation. An ecstasy. A disappointment. An instant. A lie. A theft. A rite of passage. Whatever you call it, there's only one first time. A.S. King, Melvin Burgess, Keith Gray, Patrick Ness, Anne Fine, Sophie McKenzie, Bali Rai, Jenny Valentine, Mary Hooper, and Andrew Smith. Some of today's leading international YA authors contributed to this hard-hitting collection of original short stories: some funny, some moving, some haunting but all revolving around the same subject—virginity.

I'm finding that I'm really loving anthologies, especially ones by YA authors. I was excited to find a copy of LOSING IT on my porch and couldn't wait to read the selection of short tales. I read this collection in a few hours as I couldn't put it down!

LOSING IT is about teens losing their virginity. What I love about this anthology is each author's take on this sensitive subject.

Here's some of my favorites:

A.S. King's STICKY FINGERS is about a teen who realizes too late what a cheap ring from a guy she thought she liked really means. **A.S. King is one of my favorite YA authors and this short tale is nothing short of amazing on how she shows us the protagonist's raw emotional feelings that ring so true.

THE AGE OF CONSENT by Jenny Valentine had me laughing outloud about a teen's stepmother's way of discussing sex during dinner that turns into something much more. Kuddos on the unique twist Dora, the stepmother takes when discussing her own first time.

CHAT-UP LINES by Melvin Burgess shows a teen's best time dissolving into a not too great time over a little lie.

CHARLOTTE by Mary Hooper shows a young girl's hope dissolving into tragedy.

There's other equally great tales. Each one shows a different reaction to their first time. All though share a common thread of experiencing their first time.

Carolrhoda Lab is one of my favorite publishers because they deliver great YAs with unique twists. LOSING IT ranks up there with other great YA anthologies.
