Come along with Maisy for her first-ever eye test in a delightful story sure to help make this a rosy experience for little patients.

When Maisy’s friend Ella has trouble seeing numbers on the board at preschool, the two go together to Dr. Flamingo the optometrist’s office to have their eyes tested. Pirate Maisy has fun wearing an eyepatch and naming all the things she can see in a picture on the wall. But when it’s Ella’s turn, everything inside the picture looks blurry. Oh dear! Luckily, Dr. Flamingo is there to take care of her, with a special machine that looks inside her eyes and some big funny glasses with dials that let Ella see everything clearly. Best of all, she gets to pick out some yellow-framed glasses, and Maisy finds some snazzy red sunglasses of her own. With Lucy Cousins’s trademark brilliant colors and cheery characters, this twenty-third First Experiences story is ideal for reassuring little ones ahead of their first visit to the eye doctor.

Maisy Goes to the Eye Doctor is a wonderful book that introduces the idea of going to the optometrist to preschool children. The illustrative style indicative of Lucy cousin’s Maisy series makes the idea of needing glasses a colorful and joyful experience. It uses big words like Optometrist making this a great book for a grown-up to read with a child or class to learn about the concept. Maisy’s friend, Ella needs glasses and the forthright writing style shows there is nothing to fear in an appointment and that Ella is happy with her new glasses and getting to see better. Overall, the positive message and brightly colorful illustrations normalize vision healthcare and glasses to young audiences.

MAISY GOES TO THE EYE DOCTOR is a great picture book that teaches children about the experience of going to the optometrist. The story follows Maisy and her friend, Ella, who seems to be having trouble seeing. They go to the eye doctor and take turns for their checkups. Both Ella and Maisy pick out some glasses with Maisy's being sunglasses. With Ella's new glasses, now she can see the board in school.

What I loved: Maisy books are fantastic for continuity of characters and using simple sentences and images to teach children about every day concepts. This book is no exception, as little ones can learn about what it is like to go to the optometrist. Familiar characters are great for toddlers and preschoolers, who can use the platform of what they already know to explore new concepts.

The story uses short and simple phrases to describe what it is like to go to the eye doctor and how seeing the optometrist can help with getting new glasses to see better. The story also mentions that they will need to come back each year, setting up the reader for understanding the full experience. Brightly colored and contrasting images also work very well for toddlers, and the thick outline style is perfect for this age group. The font is large and easy to read throughout, which makes it easy for caregivers to read aloud.

Final verdict: MAISY GOES TO THE EYE DOCTOR is an engaging picture book that will teach young readers about what it is like to go to the optometrist. Familiar characters, approachable language, and brightly colored images will make this a win for toddlers and preschoolers.
