This ladies and gentlemen is how you finish a series.
What I loved: I'm not generally a "fantasy" reader but this series managed to hook me. I love this world and all the characters that Robin LaFevers created. Annith might be my favorite of the leading ladies. She is strong, loyal, and dedicated. She isn't afraid to fight for what is right and she isn't afraid of confrontation.
Mortal Heart is full of twists and turns that kept me on my toes until the very end. Characters and story lines of the three books are intertwined in a seamless way just the way it is supposed to be. This is one world with three girls' stories that fit together just right. I don't think you could have one without the others.
What left me wanting more: I'm pretty sad to see this story end
Final Verdict: Even if you aren't a fan of fantasy don't let this keep you away from His Fair Assassin. This is a series that is great from beginning to end.

What I Loved:
It’s rare to find a series that gets so much better with each book, but good god, is His Fair Assassin one of them. I enjoyed Gravy Mercy, but for some reason, it took me a while to move forward with the series and start Dark Triumph, which I read a few months ago. Holy hell, Dark Triumph blew me away. The depth to the story and characters was just mind-blowing. I couldn’t believe I waited so long to read it. After that, I was dying for Mortal Heart. Just absolutely dying. And terrified that it wouldn’t be as good as Dark Triumph. I need not have worried, friends. Mortal Heart flew above and beyond any expectations I could have had.
Annith is a character you root for from the first second you meet her. Caring, compassionate, loyal, and dedicated, Annith demands to be loved simply by being who she is. Her desire to discover the truth and to stick up for the younger girls at the convent leads her on a journey she didn’t expect but was one that she was born for. I loved her fiercely and completely.
And by now you know that Robin writes the swooniest, most perfect romances ever. She doesn’t disappoint with Annith and her love interest. They fit together so perfectly, complement each other, and bring out the best in each other.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of the series is how the author took three different heroines, told three different stories, and yet wrote them as a cohesive whole. They feel like a part of each other, and you can see the similarities as much as the differences.
What Left Me Wanting More:
Only having to say goodbye to such beloved characters.
The Final Verdict:
The His Fair Assassin series seamlessly blends fantasy, romance, and history into an unforgettable journey of three brave and extraordinary young women. Mortal Heart is the heart-wrenching conclusion you’ve been waiting for.

Once again Robin LaFevers blows us away with the latest incredible installment in the His Fair Assassin trilogy. Annith finally gets under the spotlight, and does she ever shine.
Like the other books in the series, GRAVE MERCY and DARK TRIUMPH, the story is really driven by Annith’s strength of character. While these nuanced and well-plotted historical stories are definitely moved by certain events, battles, and political situations they are at their heart quite character-driven. Right away I got a strong sense of Annith’s character, what was important to her, and what she will and won’t do to survive. It wasn’t long before I also realized that I loved Annith best of all the Daughters of Mortain. Annith is so amazing in so many ways, and yet she spends her life ignoring her own wants and needs in order to please others. When she finally realizes just what she’s doing, and how she’s been manipulated – well, not even gods could stand in her way.
Annith really takes matters into her own hands and does what she believes is right. This isn’t easy for her; she is constantly doubting and questions her own actions and motivations. But when the moment is right Annith finds her inner strength, stands up for herself, and stands her ground behind her own decisions and desires.
Speaking of desire, we are introduced to another of Mortain’s followers: the curious Hellequin, male followers of the god of Death who are, at the moment of their deaths, given a second chance to roam the Earth on an endless Hunt in search of lost souls in order to redeem themselves for their earthly crimes. The leader of the Hellequin is a deliciously dark and brooding man named Balthazaar, and we cannot help but fall in love with him soon after Annith encounters him. The addition of the Hellequin as male followers of Mortain was really interesting.
In this (final?) installment of the His Fair Assassin series readers are treated to the secrets of the Gods, a new and heart-aching romance, and plenty of suspense and action. It is honestly my favorite book in the series so far, and Annith is my favorite of the girls.
