This book is perfect for a classroom discussion about whether war is good or bad, right or wrong, justifiable or not. Aimed at high school readers aged 11+, there is plenty to involve both boys and girls here.
Good Points
The story is told from the point of view of each brother alternately. Their opposing views with regard to the coming war mean that a rift develops between them. Both struggle with the choices they have made. The treatment of the pacifist brother at the hands of the army challenges his beliefs and his determination to stick by them. The reality of war is a terrible shock to the other brother who had dreams of bravery and glory.
