My First Guide to Space is a nonfiction book that guides children through different aspects of space. This book is split into four sections including what space is, outer space, the solar system, and the space age. This guide includes various illustrations and a shooting star search that makes it interactive.
What I Liked: When I saw this book it transported me back to the 5th grade in which I had to write a report about an aspect of space and just chose to write about the whole solar system. This book would’ve been perfect for that report and I would’ve just needed one book to do it all. I appreciated how easy it was to read through the pages and that the language was child-friendly. I also loved that there was a short glossary at the end of the book for terms that may be new to children.
I appreciated the way the author incorporated a search and find into this book as it makes for easy engagement with a younger audience. I enjoyed looking for the shooting stars on each page seeing where one wasn’t included and realizing how it made sense for that page not to include the star.
Something that I enjoyed about how this book is written is that it included up-to-date facts and some facts that I was not already familiar with. I loved learning new facts about some of my favorite planets and seeing how far we have come with research regarding space. I loved how the facts were spaced out throughout each page with a short paragraph about the topic and then short facts surrounding each of the other images throughout each of the pages.
Final Verdict: My First Guide to Space is a great book introducing space to children ages 6 and up. This book is great for children beginning to show an interest in space and remains a good tool to teach older children about the various aspects of space. This book is also one that adults will enjoy reading and learning about how much has changed from when they were younger.
