In this bilingual picture book, cousins from opposite sides of the border visit each other’s towns and delight in their similarities and differences.

Two cousins live in two towns, separated by a river. But there is also a bigger divide—the US-Mexico border—which means they live in different countries. On the girl’s side, English is the main language, and on the boy’s it’s Spanish. The cousins love their towns, and they love visiting each other’s, where they notice some things are the same and some are wonderfully different, adding up to a vibrant world full of even more possibilities.

Author Nicholas Solis shows how border towns are special places, beautiful and dynamic, because two cultures can be better than one—and both cultures should be equally treasured and respected.

MY TOWN / MI PUEBLO is a sweet picture book about family and what brings us together. The story follows 2 cousins in English and Spanish, with the same words appearing in each language. The cousins live in towns separated by a river, and they love to spend time together and see the unique things about each of their towns. They are separated by a border with a bridge and soldiers that make it tough to see each other easily, yet they are so close.

What I loved: This is such a great story about family and all the ways we are connected and alike, even when separated by a border and language. The cousins and their worlds come to life in facing pages, sharing each spread. The text in two languages is a great touch that will allow readers to experience it in both Spanish and English, helping to make the connections between the two towns. Colorful and detailed illustrations really bring it all to life.

The text is written clearly throughout, and readers can choose to read in either or both languages on each spread. The story is overall a story of love and connection, with some light messaging around the difficulty of the border, the lines and soldiers that prevent an easy flow back and forth. Images throughout really capture all the emotions and meaning of the story.

Final verdict: MY TOWN / MI PUEBLO is a heartfelt picture book story of family and connection, as well as the ways we are alike no matter which language we speak or side of the border. This is a story that young readers will enjoy and could spark some important discussions about the things that divide us - and bring us together.
