This book was given to my by my history teacher and she warned me not to read it before I went to sleep at night. It's not just any book about the Holocaust (or Shoah), it's a painful memoir of a time spent suffering in a concentration camp and watching a loved one die. The most emotionally wrenching part of the book (and I hope I don't spoil anything for readers)is when his father is sick and crying out and he doesn't go to him because he's afraid, he's emotionally exhausted and tired of the sickness and death around him and the guilt and regret that not only the author feels, but that you feel reading it. it's such a personal thing for him to have written and I felt like I shouldn't have been in on this-like i had no business prying into this part of his life even though it's open for the world to see.

If you have any interest in learning about this time, you must read this book.
