The fifth grade class at Laketon Elementary are called the Unshushables by faculty and staff. They can't seem to keep quite and the boys and girls still dislike each other even though they should be outgrowing the "cootie" phase. This all comes to a head when the de facto leader of the boys, Dave, and the de facto leader of the girls, Lynsey, agree to a contest to see who can go the longest without talking: all of the fifth-grade boys or all of the fifth-grade girls. The contest is going well until the principal gets involved and wants to put a stop to it.

This is a good read for late elementary-schooled kids. It is funny, has a good plot and memorable characters, and is realistic. It is perhaps a bit moralistic at the end, but not too overbearing. I can see both girls and boys being interested in this book.
