NOT QUITE BLACK AND WHITE is an adorable picture book that teaches colors with an engaging rhyme and wonderful illustrations. Every page features an animal in black and white—and they each have an item of clothing or an accessory in a non-black-or-white color.
The pictures are simple, but expressive. And the use of black and white except for the pop of something else will help little learners grasp the concept of color. A little bee that flies through each spread adds a seek-and-find aspect to the book and makes it even more entertaining. The parade of animals sporting their colors through the final two pages will allow readers to revisit the lesson—and get another glimpse of their favorite animals.
This book is a definite winner. Parents and teachers won’t tire of reading it, and kids will want to tear through the pages over and over again. It should be a part of every preschooler’s library, and I hope it comes out as a board book too. The pictures would be a big hit with babies!
My thanks to the publisher and YA Books Central for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
