On This Beautiful Island

Both written and illustrated by Edwin Fontánez, On This Beautiful Island is both educational and entertaining. Follow Guanín, a Taíno, through an average day in the heart of the forest over 500 years ago.

Set on the island of Puerto Rico in a simpler time, Gaunín takes readers to his favorite places in the forest, accompanied by his parrot Tahite. Brightly and colorfully illustrated throughout, readers will meet hummingbirds and tiny frogs, and visit the ocean and the forest.

The end of the book features some historical information on the Taíno people, whose culture dates back 2,000 years. This would be a good picture book to use in a classroom setting when studying other cultures. Recommended for readers aged 5+.
