Okay, I did prove that there's more to Inside than we knew. That a whole world exists beyond this cube we live in. Trella thought her part was over after she successfully leads the revolt that takes the power away from the Travas and the Pop Cops. But she's not ready to be the leader the other Scrubs expect her to be. Including the cute Riley.

That's the least of her problems. Seems the Uppers and Scrubs still distrust each other. The new Committee is going no where. Trella's still not willing to admit Dr. Lamont might in fact be her birthmother. Also it seems others are trying to sabotage any kind of truce. Just when Trella thinks things can't be any worse, she finds something that will make her question her whole existence.

I admit I thought the first book in this series, INSIDE OUT, had a tad bit too much telling of Trella's world. I didn't really have a feel for Trella until the middle of the story. The second book though shows us Trella and her conflicts with not only those around her but her growing attraction to Riley. I liked the dialogue between Trella and Riley. The chemistry between the two of them is more intense and feels very real. One of my favorite characters had to be Dr. Lamont, who Trella still considers a traitor. Then add the mystery on who exactly is behind the explosions and who to trust.

Trella's a strong heroine who's not afraid to battle back. She does get in more than one bloody fight but she refuses to back down. That and her honesty about her whole existence are a big plus in this story.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was very different to the other type of books that Maria V. Snyder writes. She usually writes ones with people with magical powers and set in a mythical world. This one is a dystopian, and set in the far future, in space.

I think I preferred this one more than Inside Out, as I think that the idea of the people from Outside coming in caught my attention. I liked how Trella found herself the leader of a revolution, a position she didn't want. This reminded me a lot of The Hunger Games, for some odd reason, but I think I prefer The Hunger Games, by far.

I think the characters develop a lot more in this book. I thought the relationship between Riley and Trella was no way near as good as the one between Valek and Yelena, in the Study Series. I loved this book, though. I think Maria V. Snyder is an amazing writer, I and I wish she would hurry up and finish writing Scent of Magic.

This is the sequel to Outside In, to which I had a mostly meh response. I am very happy to report that I really liked the sequel. I cannot say with any assurance whether this stems from my altered expectations, a change in my mood, a decrease in frostiness in Trella or a general improvement in the story. Perhaps all three. Outside In definitely had less crawling through the pipes and a bit more character development for everyone.

I really appreciated the position Trella found herself in after the revolution completed and the real governing began. She, much like Katniss in The Hunger Games, has unintentionally found herself the figurehead of a revolution, and everyone has expectations of her. As she says on page 64: "I've done my part. It's time for other people to step in and set up a better system. I wouldn't know the first thing about running a society." She fears the authority that gives her and would prefer to continue exploring. Trella really grows through the course of this novel, way more than in the last one, but she does so very naturally.

As a last comment, I have to give Snyder some major props for the steamy (if sadly brief) scenes between Riley and Trella. She can write some good stuff that definitely leaves you wanting to find a Riley of your own (not to mention a shower). I will be definitely be reading Snyder's Study series soon!
