Paper Dragons follows a predictable story structure for middle-grade fantasy. This formula is perfect for younger audiences. There were engaging elements such as a young main character who has a lot of potential but needs to learn it. You have a bully that the main character needs to deal with, and always with grace. You have quirky friends who bring out the best in the main character and create an unbreakable bond. Then finally there is a conflict that they must overcome.

What left me wanting more: I wish there had been more time taken by the author to set up the setting and explain the setup of the world. I highly recommend reading the book summary for important information that is not found otherwise within the story. Not having some of this key information within the book hurt the flow of the book and made me feel lost at times about what was happening and why.

Who I Recommend This For: I think the book will have the most impact and enjoyment with Middle-Grade audiences. I do wish it had the same flow as Amari, Battle Dragons, Prince of Nowhere, etc. that would help it appeal to older audiences.

*Listened to an advanced copy from Penguin Random House – Overall, I would not recommend this audiobook for younger audiences because it may lead to confusion if not listened to carefully. I think this would be better enjoyed as a physical read where readers can take their time to enjoy it.
