Smarty Jones, a descendant of the famous Secretariat, was the 2004 winner of the Kentucky Derby. After winning the Preakness, many thought he would be the next Triple Crown winner. Sadly, he came in 2nd in the Belmont Stakes, but even though Smarty didnt attain the Triple Crown, everyone agrees that he is one heck of a horse.

Quips, Quotes & Oats is by Robert L. Merz, but the words and the attitude are all Smarty Jones, through and through. He can talk a lot of hay, this horse.

Youll learn about his early life, the Smarty team, and even about some of his famous ancestors (besides Secretariat, hes also supposed to be related to Clever Hans, the horse that could count).

Interspersed with the text are photos of Smarty and his people and some inspirational quotes about racing and horses in general. This is a quick read that will bring a smile to your face.

Recommended for readers aged 8 and up or anyone interested in horse racing or the Derby. Or in smart aleck horses who just want to have fun and inspire people.
