Knowledge comes with a price.

Tommy and Careen no longer believe the Office of Civilian Safety and Defense's miracle antidote can protect them from a terrorist's chemical weapons. After accidentally discovering the antidote's real purpose, they join the fight to undermine the OCSD's bid for total control of the population.

Being part of the Resistance brings with it a whole new set of challenges. Not everyone working for change proves trustworthy, and plans to spark a revolution go awry with consequences far beyond anything they bargained for.

Tommy and Careen's differing viewpoints threaten to drive a wedge between them, and their budding relationship is tested as their destinies move toward an inevitable confrontation with the forces that terrorize the nation.

Where does love fit in when you're trying to start a revolution?

Immediately upon finishing book one in the series, I was drawn into the next part of their saga. It’s an intriguing world that grips you right from the get go.

The story picks up as Tommy and Careen are making their escape from the capital. They’re on the run, avoiding road blocks and just trying not to be seen. That’s no easy thing with Careen’s picture with her distinctive pink highlights being displayed in the media as the face of a terrorist.

Before long, they’re back on their original mission. Soon they are finally able to join the resistance and fight back against the oppression the entire company has been living under. Regular citizens are only just starting to realize that something isn’t right. Nudged along by the efforts of the resistance, they wake up to the realities. Only, not everyone in the resistance agrees with the methods used to reach their goals. Some think they need to take a more active stance in proving the governments wrongs, leading up to an explosive ending that left me shocked and saddened.

This is a great follow up. The writing is crisp and moves along at a fast clip, leaving little room for boredom. I absolutely love Careen and seeing her come into her own is a special thing to watch. She seemed to grow stronger with every page as she tries to decide what’s right and struggles with the consequences of her efforts. She doesn’t come through unscathed and must confront herself and the person she wants to be.

Tommy isn’t as strong in this sequel. At times he came across as being much younger than Careen, much less mature. This was used to create conflict that didn’t need to be there. He would have been much better off without the petty squabbling. Wes, on the other hand came across as much more capable of handling everything that was coming their way. He was reckless, but that worked for him.

I was slightly disappointed in the resistance as a whole. I pictured a much bigger operation. In order to create real change, they’d need to do a lot more than they were. It was underwhelming, but then that ending. Wow. That’s some great excitement. I found myself wanting to yell at them when I could see everything starting to get messed up. My heart was pounding and it didn’t stop until well after the final page.

An action packed adventure that sucks you into its world of evil government organizations and control where a teenage girl is their best hope without sacrificing believably. That is a great feat.
