What I Loved:

ROMANCING THE NERD by Leah Rae Miller is a cute and fast read about two adorkable high school students. Dan Garrett is a former nerd turned popular kid due to a growth spurt and his star role on the Varsity basketball team. Zelda is the bank geek who can’t quite get over Dan’s betrayal of the nerd community (and her personally, but whose keeping track) and when he publically embarrasses her in front of the whole school, she takes revenge into her own hands with a plan that ends up backfiring.
ROMANCING THE NERD is told in alternating points of view which built a lot of depth to the story. Just Dan’s or just Zelda’s perspective would have left something lacking but alternating the male and female view points of the story created a perfect balance of humor and suspense- will they? Won’t they? Will he ever find out she’s playing a prank on him? Will she ever confess?
While I haven’t read The Summer I Became A Nerd, it didn’t impact my ability to understand the story or connect to the characters in any way. The conversations between our main characters and their friends was quick, snappy, funny, and drew me in right away.

What Left Me Wanting More:

At times, the writing felt elementary and the dialogue was sometimes slightly unbelievable. Especially in the online conversations Zelda and Dan were having while Zelda was pretending to be someone else. Their conversations, and her advice, has the tendency to feel a little like an after school special. While it was slightly distracting and took me out of the story, the plot and pacing was enough to keep me going.

The Final Verdict:

ROMANCING THE NERD by Leah Rae Miller is an entertaining and laugh out loud story of two nerdy teens separated by poor circumstances and learning how to overcome their difficulties.
