Before it happened… Brynn had a group of best friends, a boyfriend who loved her, a growing talent for pottery. She had a life. And then…she had none. After it happened… Everything was lost. The boy she now knew never loved her. The friends who felt she betrayed their trust. The new life just beginning to grow inside her. Brynn believes her future is as empty as her body until Christian, the boy next door, starts coming around. Playing his guitar and pushing her to create art once more. She meets some new friends at the local community center, plus even gets her dad to look her in the eye again…sort of. But letting someone in isn’t as easy as it seems. Now… Can Brynn open up her heart to truly find her life’s own beauty, when living for the after means letting go of the before?

Searching for Beautiful was mainly a story about loss and trust. Brynn loses her mother, and in the aftermath has an affair that she later on finds out was a lie. But she got pregnant and no one is ready to believe that she didn’t not know who she was really dating. Everyone turns against her, thinking she had lied about her age and then even aborted her own baby, when the truth is that she lost it the day she found the truth. In a state of despair over the loss of her mother and her unborn baby, she feels that no one can see her pain, and no one even would believe her. She also has trust issues because of the betrayal, and when a childhood friend comes back to town and tries to befriend her, she is wary. Slowly, she learns that communicating is the key to trust, and that not everyone is out to betray her. Also, that everybody has their own problems and sometimes it is better to comfort someone than half a self-pity party.

Writing-wise, this book has it all. It keeps the emotions of the story well, and keeps your attention. As for the story, it is well, predictable and so I wasn’t so impressed with it. The characters, however, were very real – flawed, like the main character. Take Christian for example – he doesn’t chase her or keep after her, even when she pushes him away. He wants to be friends and if she doesn’t, then he wouldn’t bother. I liked that their friendship grew rather than him just being there as a emotional buffer. The predictability was redeemed by the writing and the characters, actually. So, a good and sweet read and recommended for readers of contemporary fiction.
