I'm a huge fan of diverse novels, especially ones that are set in the paranormal world. I was beyond excited when I heard Daniel Jose Older had a sequel to Shadowshaper. In that book readers are introduced to Sierra and her ability to put spirits into paintings and bring them to life. We also see the beauty and danger of NYC through her and her friends eyes. Totally loved! I also highly recommend listening to the audio. I guarantee you'll be blown away!

The sequel is just as colorful and magical. The magical world that Older has created is totally amazing. I loved this one just as much as the first book in the series.

What worked: This sequel picks up right where Shadowshaper ended. Now Sierra's grandfather dies and she finds that there are other enemies out there that want to either use her for their own purposes or destroy her.

Sierra is strong-willed, courageous, and a protagonist many will be able to identify with. What I totally love is how diversity is shown throughout this novel. There are scenes with police brutality that are a fact of life for people of color. Older doesn't hold back with these scenes. They're powerful and reflect what's happening currently in our country.

The story is riveting and kept me glued to the pages. I wanted to see how Sierra would battle her latest paranormal enemy and how she would use the spirits on the other side to help.

Sierra must also work with others to defeat the 'Hound of Light' who is determined to destroy her and those she loves. Great pacing and realistic dialogue that give a flavor of Sierra's Brooklyn neighborhood. There's a colorful cast of characters with their own quirks and abilities.

Readers also see how her relationship with fellow shadowshaper Robbie changes. We see the awkwardness of realizing that some relationships do move on and it's okay to find other interests.

Older infuses magic in each scene that is captivating. Huge extra points for giving readers a diverse protagonist in a paranormal world that is unique and highly engaging.
