Today we’re putting a spotlight on Becky Wallace’s soon-to-be release novel, The Skylighter. Read on for more about Becky, her novels, a deleted scene from Book One: The Storyspinner, and a giveaway!
Meet Becky Wallace!
In second grade, Becky Wallace had to sit in the corner because she refused to write anything except princess stories and fairy tales (and because she talked too much). Her time in isolation gave her plenty of opportunities to dream up the fantasy worlds she’s been dabbling with ever since. She was lucky enough to find her own real-life Prince Charming. They have four munchkins and live in happy little town near Houston, Texas.
Meet The Skylighter: Book Two in The Keeper Chronicles!
As the last of the royal line, Johanna is the only person who can heal a magical breach in the wall that separates her kingdom of Santarem from the land of the Keepers, legendary men and women who wield elemental magic. The barrier protects Santarem from those Keepers who might try to take power over mere humans…Keepers who are determined to stop Johanna and seize the wall’s power for themselves.
And they’re not the only ones. As the duchys of Santarem descend into war over the throne, Johanna relies more than ever on the advice of her handsome companion, Lord Rafael DeSilva. But Rafi is a duke too, and his people come first. As their friendship progresses into the beginnings of a tender relationship, Johanna must wonder: is Rafi looking out for her happiness, or does he want the throne for himself?
With war on the horizon, Johanna and Rafi dodge treacherous dukes and Keeper assassins as they race to through the countryside, determined to strengthen the wall before it’s too late…even if it means sacrificing their happiness for the sake of their world.
Now meet the book that started The Keeper Chronicles: The Storyspinner!
Drama and danger abound in this fantasy realm where dukes play a game for the throne, magical warriors race to find the missing heir, and romance blossoms where it is least expected.
In a world where dukes plot their way to the throne, a Performer’s life can get tricky. And in Johanna Von Arlo’s case, it can be fatal. Expelled from her troupe after her father’s death, Johanna is forced to work for the handsome Lord Rafael DeSilva. Too bad they don’t get along. But while Johanna’s father’s death was deemed an accident, the Keepers aren’t so sure.
The Keepers, a race of people with magical abilities, are on a quest to find the princess—the same princess who is supposed to be dead and whose throne the dukes are fighting over. But they aren’t the only ones looking for her. And in the wake of their search, murdered girls keep turning up—girls who look exactly like the princess, and exactly like Johanna.
With dukes, Keepers, and a killer all after the princess, Johanna finds herself caught up in political machinations for the throne, threats on her life, and an unexpected romance that could change everything.
An Excerpt from THE STORYSPINNER for YABooks Central
Johanna balanced on the narrow handrail that wrapped around the gazebo, hanging sheets of deep blue and silver silk from hooks cleverly hidden under the eaves.
“You really shouldn’t be up there, Miss,” Brynn said as she handed Johanna the next sheet of silk. “If you fell and were injured, Lord Rafael would have my head.”
“Oh, he would not.” Johanna stepped around the supporting post and moved to the next section of the gazebo. “And there’s no chance I’ll get hurt, but my brothers on the other hand…”
Michael had climbed onto Joshua’s shoulders, and was helping hang the silk sheets on one of the other gazebos. He stood surprisingly steady, with Joshua gripping his ankles, and they worked with one of the other maids at a pace nearly as fast as Brynn and Johanna. Joshua took careful, measured steps and Michael never wobbled, even when he stopped to wave or talk to someone who walked by.
Something in Johanna’s chest ached at the sight. Joshua was solid and steady, offering quiet support, while Michael turned a chore into a feat of entertainment. Her brothers, who’d only had basic training as acrobats, were showing a natural talent they may never get to use. She needed to encourage their practice every day, so that someday they’d be accepted as apprentices at Performer’s Camp.
“Don’t look, but someone has finally made his glorious way toward us.” Brynn handed Johanna the last sheet of silk, rather than watching Dom approach. She’d been snippy and short tempered all day, but never more than when the younger DeSilva was mentioned. “It’s not like I expected him to help, but everyone stops working when he’s around. It’s infuriating.”
Johanna hid her smile in yards of silk. Brynn’s face had already gone as red as the late blooming asters in the meadow beyond. The poor girl couldn’t hide her feelings at all.
“Good morning, ladies,” he said with a bow. “It looks as if preparations are well underway.”
“No thanks to you,” Brynn mumbled as she bent to secure the silk to the gazebo’s foundation.
Johanna jumped down, landing lightly in front of Dom. “It seems as if you’ve had a busy morning, my lord. Who’s at the center of gossip today?”
Instead of answering, Dom gathered the next stack of silks into his arms. “Why don’t I help you with the last gazebo while Brynn finishes here?”
Johanna looked at Brynn for approval.
“Go. Be of some assistance.” Brynn stood up and hastily tucked a few of her red curls back into her bun. “Keepers know I’ve got plenty of other things to do.”
“Perhaps you should do them out of the sun,” Dom suggested, touching her cheek with the back of his hand. Then as he realized what he’d done, he snatched his hand away. “I mean…you wouldn’t want your skin to burn.”
Brynn’s mouth opened and closed a few times, looking from his face to his hand. “Of course not, my lord.”
Johanna freed the material from under Dom’s arm, and left the two of them to their awkwardness.
A hundredfoot tall balsa tree hugged the back side of the next gazebo. Johanna placed her foot on a knot, and leapt onto the railing, steadying herself with a hand on the roof.
“Here, let me help you with that.” Dom offered the first sheet of silk. It was deep blue and matched the vest he wore over his linen shirt.
“How about you tell me what just happened there?” Johanna smirked down at Dom, though his face had turned atypically serious.
“Nothing,” he said, fingers running along a snag in the silk, not meeting Johanna’s eyes. “Let’s get back to work.”
“Oh, certainly,” she said, stifling a laugh. “We don’t want to seem lazy.”
Dom looked up at her, dark eyes sparkling. “No, we want to appear inept. Then no one will ask us to do anything else.”
“Is that your secret, Lord DeSilva?”
In response, Dom gave her half a grin that was full of mischief. “It’s no secret.”
