A hauntingly romantic paranormal Jane Eyre reimagining, by the author of Phantom Heart!

Eighteen-year-old Jane Reye is a psychic artist. She draws what she sees, and what she sees are spirits and the supernatural. Growing up orphaned, she’s now of legal age and can no longer return to the girls' school she’s called home for most of her life. Lost and alone after the death of her lifelong friend, she receives an invitation to partake in a study at the English manor Fairfax Hall: an investigation of the property that requires her specific area of expertise. Upon arrival, Jane understands this will be no ordinary study when she meets Elias Thornfield, the elusive proprietor of the estate, a boy her age, roguishly handsome, who dons a mysterious eye patch. During the study it becomes clear that something is amiss—something having to do with Elias and the spiritual activity taking place around the manor. Turning to her art to unravel the mystery, Jane is shocked to find that her talents—and her growing affection for Elias—could be the key to saving him from a horrible fate.

Jane has grown up being able to sense and draw the dead. She’s learned to try to ignore them the best she can to avoid harassment but life doesn’t always work that way. Now that Jane is eighteen, she can no longer live at the girl’s home she’s grown up in. So she takes a high paying job using her odd psychic talents to help clear a haunting. After traveling, she finds herself in front of a manor called Fairfax Hall and meets two others who’ve been hired to work with her.

There’s Giovanni who can sense the dead too and has a witty sense of humor. He works on feelings and touching objects. The second is Ingrid who uses tarot cards and entertains a huge social media fan base. The three make for an odd team sense they don’t agree on much, but it’s made worse when they meet their host.

Elias Thornfield is much younger than they expected and seems to be keeping secrets that are pertinent in solving the spooky case. But Jane has her dark past too and the more she digs, the more she feels, which isn’t the safest thing in their situation. Emotions must be kept in check so these phantom beings can’t take advantage of them. However, the thing haunting Fairfax Hall is much darker and more powerful than anything they expected. With Elias’s life on the line, can they gather enough information and power to save him?

STRANGE UNEARTHLY THINGS is a bone-chilling young adult gothic romance full of ghosts and dark pasts. I adore the slow-burn romance between Jane and Elias and how strong of a character Jane is. She’s able to swallow her fear in the most horrifying situations. That being said, Giovanni is definitely my favorite character. He’s the comic relief that we didn’t realize we needed. I love his witty comments and how he tries to be positive in each situation. Each character is unique in their own way with personalities that paint the perfect image in the reader’s mind.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this to teens and adults who are fans of horror, gothic romance, and classic retellings, Jane Eyre in particular. There were times where I had to pause because I got a bit scared when I was reading it in the middle of the night but to me this makes it a better read because I felt myself invested in the outcome. Definitely makes you look at shadows differently and held my interest the whole way through.
