I had high hopes for this book but it didn't hit the mark for me. Summer and the City takes place the summer before Carrie Bradshaw is supposed to start at Brown. She meets Samantha Jones and Miranda Hobbes and this book highlights how they first met and formed the friendships made famous on Sex and the City.
So, why didn't I love this book? The big thing, I found Carrie's character immature and selfish at times. I guess I expected to read about the confident and cool Carrie Bradshaw of the later television series. This wasn't her. I get that this book takes place prior to all of that but I didn't really see many hints of the personality of the older Carrie.
One thing I did like is watching Carrie exploring New York for the first time. She has to learn a lot and make the ultimate choice to head to college or stay in New York. She thinks it's going to be easy but it isn't. I don't think she always handled herself in the best way but everyone has to grow up and learn, right?
If you are a fan of Sex and the City then I wouldn't discourage you from reading this. I do think 14 is a little young to read this because of some of the adult nature but it isn't anything overly graphic. This wasn't for me but it might be for you!
