Child abuse, especially the kind that is sexual in nature, is never easy to talk about not for the abused or the adults around the child. Barbara J. Behms simply told Tears of Joy is a good book to use to open the door on this terrible topic.
Carly is a cheerful, outgoing child until one day something changes. The reader, like Carlys family and friends in the book, dont know whats behind Carlys sudden change. The once happy girl is now sad and distant and doesnt want to talk or play. Most of the adults around her do the right thing by asking Carly what is wrong, but true to what happens often in real life, Carly says nothing. She doesnt know what to say or even how to say it until her school counselor talks to her.
Then the horrible truth comes out and the counselor is able to get Carly to see that the abuse isnt her fault and that, no matter what, telling is the right thing to do. Also included in the book are helpful hints for adults on what to do if a child confides in them and what to do about it.
This is the kind of book that should be kept handy in elementary school counselor offices everywhere. If you are an adult and you suspect child abuse is happening, this book may also be a good tool to get the child to talk with you. Written in straightforward language with bright and colorful illustrations, any child can relate to the books message. There should be more books that tackle this issue, as horrible as it is.

"Tears of Joy" is the inspiring and uplifting story of a young girl who comes to terms with childhood sexual abuse. It is a book of hope and healing for ALL children -- and for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. "Tears of Joy" gently and kindly educates children about the issue. With the information in "Tears of Joy," children will be empowered to protect themselves, and society can fight back against this pervasive problem.
"This is not just a book for abused children, but for all children. It encourages honesty and bravery of language, even in the hard times, the only way to become ourselves." -- Ani DiFranco, singer/songwriter
"Most children don't tell if they have been sexually violated. Most adults don't tell! "Tears of Joy" will give children the opportunity of disclosing 'the secret.' How I wish this book had been available when I was a child. It could have saved me fifty years of shame and pain." -- Marilyn Van Derbur, former Miss America, incest survivor
"Until we can talk to our chidren about sexual abuse as casually as we do about other topics, they will continue to be victimized by adults. Every parent needs to talk about sexual abuse to his/her children. "Tears of Joy" is a good way to start!" -- Dr. Lois Lee, founder, children of the Night
"This is an important book, striving to reach the segment of the population that's first hurt by child abuse -- the very young and vulnerable. All children need to feel protected, and all children need to hear the message Ms. Behm's book contains." -- Janis Ian, Singer/songwriter
