Kimberly Nadine Knight's novel The Cilantro in Apple Pie was an unexpected joy to read. From the title I half expected it to be a poor attempt at informing us about another culture. HOWEVER, it was not that at all. I learned so much about the Trinidad and Tobago culture from the narrative in the book. Gil and Rubie, both claiming to be loners, join forces to survive life and high school. Gil becomes Rubie's protector and guide to survive the "mean girls" at their private school. The ending was a surprise for me, I had pictured something totally different. It was a joy to read and I want to read more about Rubie and Gil. - Kathleen L. Bench
