Just as affable Texan Marshall Morris is entering college, the pandemic explodes, derailing his life. Confusion reigns as the COVID virus sweeps across the country. Though shaken when he is infected, he accepts the news with good cheer. During his “prison-like” quarantine, not seeing his friends is tough, but he remains close to Mallory, his diminutive African American girlfriend. They talk incessantly on the phone. Finally, over her objections, a clandestine rendezvous is planned.
Though he lacks symptoms, Marshall worries he may be a spreader. It crushes him when the disease wipes out a cadre of old war vets with whom he is close. He resolves to take the pandemic seriously and rails against young people who refuse to wear masks or conform to social distancing. The worst is realized when his precious mother is struck down by the virus and rushed to the hospital. Marshall just knows she got it from him.
Unable to visit his mother, he takes a job at a local real estate company to keep busy. He is unaware that the owner of the company is in desperate financial straits and is the middleman in a bizarre scheme to inject an untested miracle cure for COVID into infected patients at a local hospital. Marshall becomes an unwitting player in the international plot hatched by a shady doctor and wealthy playboy. Nothing will stop him when he discovers the surely fatal injection is to be given to his own mother. The hospital’s COVID ward is a fortress. Can he penetrate it and get to her in time?
The COVID KID is the second of the Marshall Morris series, which is targeted for young adults.
