Join Bat, Cat, and Rat on their three-and-a-half sweet and silly roommate adventures in this hilarious “gift to reading” (School Library Journal, starred review), the first of a series, from New York Times bestsellers Ame Dyckman and Mark Teague.

What happens when three friends—a bat, a cat, and a rat—move in together?

In “Sharing,” Bat, Cat, and Rat find a cozy home to share. But will choosing rooms put their sharing skills to the test?

In “Joking,” Rat sets off a series of pranks and shenanigans with his rubber spider that have the trio screaming in surprise and laughing in delight.

In “Reading,” Cat catches Bat and Rat reading over her shoulder—or so she thinks, until it turns out they haven’t learned to read yet. Can Cat teach her friends to read along with her?

The Cozy Home follows Bat, Cat, and Rat through three and a half roommate adventures. The three stories talk about them choosing rooms, Rat pranking his roommates, and Cat teaching her friends to read.

What I liked: Bat, Cat, and Rat are three silly characters who are now living with each other in a small home. I love the differences in their sizes especially as they all try to share the same room. This book contains few words on each page which is great for younger readers learning to read. This book uses repeated words and phrases so that younger readers will have an easier time reading this by themselves.

I love the unlikely friendship between these three characters and their silly antics. My favorite story out of the three was “Joking” as Rat is playing pranks on his two friends. I enjoyed that Cat was not pleased with the prank that was being played and how Bat got involved in the prank as well. I love that the spider that is introduced in this story is hidden throughout the rest of the book in the background and brought up again in “Sleeping.”

Final Verdict: The Cozy Home is a great way to introduce children to the concept of chapter books as it has various stories in one and is the first book in a series. Children will laugh at the silly antics that the three roommates get into and be excited for the next books in this series to see what our new friends are up to.
