By #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue. Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever. And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe. Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King. To win a place at the Court, she must defy him--and face the consequences. In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

Having only read one book of Holly's I wasn't caught up in the hype of her writing a new YA trilogy. But I liked enough of her magic writing to dive right in and see what the fuss in all about... and oh fiction gods!

The Cruel Prince grips you form the very beginning and does not let go. It starts with Jude our heroine who lives in the mortal world but then her parents are murdered by Murdoc a fae knight and then she and her sisters are taken to live in Fae. In a world where the Fae treat mortals as playthings, Jude has been training tirelessly to become a Knight and try to earn herself a place of respect with the Fae. Which is were we meet Prince Cardan who makes it his mission to treat Jude as the poor powerless mortal Jude is, they're enemies and push each other to dangerous limits every day.

This book has a dangerous plot where everyone is out to kill each other, political intrigue when the crown is at stake and of course Jude fighting everyone who crosses her path. What I loved about this book is that everyone is slightly villainous, you don't know who to trust and as the stakes get higher and higher your left on the edge of your treat dreading but still excited to see what comes next! Possibly my favourite to a series!

Holly Black's writing is one of those that stick with you even after you've finished the book. Jude is a mortal living in the world of faeries and she feels powerless compared to them. To gain power, she must work hard and strive to be the best she can.

Keeping focused can be hard when you have someone like Prince Cardan and his friends making your life a living hell. But Jude uses their bullying as fuel for her fire. It makes her train harder so she can best them one day.

When a new High King is to be crowned, things start changing for Jude. They start looking up. But bloodshed is a hard thing to avoid when more than one person wants the crown.

Final Verdict: I really loved Holly Black's dark and enthralling writing. I would recommend this to fans of Sarah J. Maas, Fae, and fantasy. There wasn't as much romance as I was hoping for and the ending hurt my heart, but it makes me eager for the next one.
