Lord Loss is the first of ten books in the Demonata series by Darren Shan. This book will make the hair on on your back stand up and give you nightmares at night. Its thrilling, exciting, fun, enjoyable, and terrifying. The Idea of Demons being brought to life is a big fear of many who believe. Lord Loss is definitely a page turner!
An ordinary boy named Grubitsch Grady, Grubbs Grady for short, lived an ordinary life with an ordinary family. Fights with his sister, Grett, the laziness in school work and caring parents. What Grubbs doesn’t realize that his world will change and its not in a good way. Definitely not in a good way. It all began with his family acting odd. Grubbs curiosity for the sudden change would lead him into a situation no one would want to be in. He discovers the reality of demons and terror.
Grubbs new life is filled with magic and monsters. After the things he has seen, of course he would need help. The horrific events had Grubbs in a situation of terror. His adjustment to the new lifestyle was hard and slow. He was taken to the countryside for a place to stay and learn all about what happened to him. With the help from a relative, learned more and more about the terrorizing demons and sharp toothed werewolves. A nightmare came to life.

This book is great. Amazing. Awesome. Words can't describe how crazy The Demonata series is.
The best part is when Grubbs plays chess with Lord Loss to turn his long lost brother back into a human. It's a very gruesome book and not for everyone. Definitely not kids.
* reviewed by Chance, he's to lazy to make his own profile.

Grubbs Grady thinks of himself as any ordinary teenager, until one night when he first encounters demons and the demon-master Lord Loss. When Grubbs goes to live with his mysterious Uncle Dervish, he tries to forget about the nightmare he witnessed, but now animal corpses are found, and while Grubbs and his new friend Bill-E try to figure out what was behind the attacks, Dervish is acting in a funny way and Grubbs suspects it has somethings to do with the Grady's family curse...

I just read this book and just from the first two chapters I thought "WOW". I am a big fan of books like this, well I am now, and it is hard to find this sorta book. I cant belive that Darren Shan went from not to violent books about vampires, to gory as hell demon books.
The storyline is spectacular and the descriptons are done amazingly well.

There's demons. Magic. An ancient curse. And chess. Grubbs Grady has been taught chess since a very young age. He's never wondered why. But, unfortunately for him, the answer is going to alter his life forever. One day he enters his home to discover the place in ruins. His mom, dad and sister dead. Soon he finds himself tossed into a world where magic is real, demons want to kill you and a curse hovering over his shoulder. Darren Shans prose is filled with gruesome details and every page is filled with action. Theres never a dull moment in this particular novel.

Grubbs is just a regular kid, ok, maybe a bit over the top with the torturous little brother thing, but yes he is normal compared to what goes on when his parents leave him with a friend to supposedly go see a ballet...
Grubbs family loves chess; they have a board in every room, but Grubbs doesn't understand at all why it's so big of an obsession for them. That's why he doesn't understand the horrific scene when he sneaks back into the house when the rest of his family is supposedly at the ballet.
The scene is so gruesome that it is all Grubbs can do to escape from the monsters that have slaughtered his family and reach a sort of safety. Grubbs is driven into insanity which he gladly embraces instead of the horrific truth. Grubbs is brought to a mental facility until he gets well enough to go and live with his uncle. Once there, Grubbs tries to unravel the truth behind the murder of his family.
This is a very gruesome book. It's probably (well actually, postively) not a good book for readers with a weak stomach. A little lighter would be to read the Cirque du Freak books, it's not as gory. The book was quite well done with a few different stories wrapped up into a bundle. Surprises are right around the corner, so it keeps the reader interested. The gory factor is really big in this book, but the actual story isn't that bad, sort of like an Anthony Horowitz Alex Rider book.

There are a lot of people who love to play chess; there are others who live to play the game. Grubb Gradys family lived to play chess, they played everyday. It was sort of a family obsession, or so Grubbs thought, until one horrible night when his worst nightmare came true. His parents and his sister had left him at a relatives house while they went to go see a ballet, figuring his parents had lied, he snuck out of the relatives house and started heading towards his own. Sure enough when he got home the car was in the driveway and the goriest sight imaginable awaited him inside.
He spent many months in a mental institute after that night. After a while his uncle came to take him to a new home. Grubbs made friends with a boy named Billy almost immediately. Life grew easier for Grubbs, calmer. One day, Grubbs and Billy were rifling through Grubbs uncles desk when they found a book, full of picture of family members who died young. Along with that book was another, which spoke of Werewolves and the transformation of people to them.
After a while Billy and Grubbs started following the uncle on his morning jogs, watching as he would pick up animal carcasses along the way. By then Billy was convinced that the uncle was a werewolf, although Grubbs was not as sure. Could the uncle really be a werewolf?
Lord Loss was an interesting book, very gory but otherwise very good. This book was written by Darren Shan, who is my personal favorite. I would not recommend this book to kids under the age of 12& only because the gory is very bad. I am sure that if you like this book you will love Demon Thief.
