Hotshot pilot Nax Hall has a history of making poor life choices. So it’s not exactly a surprise when he’s kicked out of the elite Ellis Station Academy in less than twenty-four hours. But Nax’s one-way trip back to Earth is cut short when a terrorist group attacks the Academy. Nax and three other washouts escape—barely—but they’re also the sole witnesses to the biggest crime in the history of space colonization. And the perfect scapegoats. On the run, Nax and his fellow failures plan to pull off a dangerous heist to spread the truth. Because they may not be “Academy material,” and they may not even get along, but they’re the only ones left to step up and fight. Full of high-stakes action, subversive humor, and underdogs becoming heroes, this YA sci-fi adventure is perfect for fans of Illuminae, Heart of Iron, or the cult classic TV show Firefly and is also a page-turning thrill ride that anyone—not just space nerds—can enjoy.

What worked: This is a high energy soap opera romp through space. Think Breakfast Club meets Firefly. There's action, suspense, hints of romance, and a heist. For sure this will appeal to fans of Guardians of the Galaxy with it's punchy dialogue and diverse characters.

I liked the premise of four so-called smart kids that end up being rejected by an elite academy in outer space. Nax is that hot-shot teen who thinks he had a sure shot at being accepted, but is beyond upset when he isn't. There's also Chase, the brilliant teen; Zee, the athletic girl; and Rion, the politician son. All of them are set to return to Earth when they witness a terrible tragedy. This is where the action and tension move the story line along at a fast pace. There's also lots of punchy, hilarious dialogue throughout.

One thing I felt that was missing was the lack of chemistry between the characters. Sure, there are flirtatious moments between Rion, Chase, and Nax, but I wanted more. Also though there is great action, I would have liked the story to slow down for a moment so we could get to know the characters more.

Overall though, this story is sure to appeal to fans of Sci-Fi adventures. Readers can't help but wonder what other adventures this cast of characters will encounter.

Compelling soap opera romp through space with a diverse cast and high energy.
Good Points
1. Breakfast Club meets Firefly
2. High energy, soap opera romp through space
