The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they've always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

Mare Barrow's blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control. The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors. But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat. Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

I loved the first book but found the second much slower. The plot was interesting and I wanted to know what happened but it felt like it was being very drawn out. Their goal (which I'm not going to spoil) and attempts to achieve it this time round made sense for the plot though it didn't feel very original.

Some of the new characters were interesting, especially their powers and it was fun to learn more about them. Relationships between the established characters developed alright but I just didn't click with the story so didn't care much about them. Except for Maven who is a complete d*ck!!! I really hate him.

A great sequel. Mare and her friends are planning to fight back against the silvers by finding other newbloods like her. I'm glad that Mare is a strong female character and I have so many feelings after reading this! I think just finding out that Captain Farley's first name is Diana was a surprise. Filled with high-stakes action, it's no wonder the ending was such a cliffhanger. I don't know if I can make it till King's Cage!

Oh, my. This is certainly worthy of the award won from GoodReads as Best Debut Author of the 2015 year. I found myself wanting more and more with each turn of the page. I was waiting with batted breath for the next step to occur. I found it engaging my senses on every level. I found the time to weave in between a gambit of emotions and feelings. I was on a series of should I or shouldn't I read the next chapter. I got my young adult fantasy adventure 5star read under my belt for this portion of the year. I eagerly await the next.

Mare Barrow was an intriguing Red girl. Living the life that she thought was her worth. She has those she loved and have lost to the conscription. She is red and nothing could every change that. Or so she thought.

A series of unfortunate happenings plague her life and lead her to the one night she meets the one person that changes her life for the rest of her life. She has no idea that the path she is now one because of the wrong pocket picked would lead her down this road.

I have to say that there are moments when I though Mare was being made out to be dumb but it played into the hand that was being dealt to her. She had to go down a certain path to make things turn out just this way.

I also have to say that I see a bit of a love triangle going on her. Mare's future is filled with test, trials, and maybe more of what she thought she left behind.

I highly suggest that one reads the two short novellas that come just before the novel. There is very insightful information in them both that will help you with the twist and turns of the full length novel.

This book started out as a book that I borrowed from the local library. By the time book 2 Glass Sword come out in February 2016. I will have it in my collection awaiting the purchase of the new release. This is to be a four full-length novel set.
