In this timeless new trilogy about love and sacrifice, a princess must find her place in a reborn world. In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia’s life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn’t—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met. On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love.

What worked for me had to be the rich language and world building that starts right on the very first page when readers get a glimpse of one elaborate design created on Princess Lia's back. Readers see how tightly controlling Lia's world is and how she wants nothing more than to not only erase the design but the loveless match that she is sure will bring her nothing but misery.

Lia is willful, strong, and stubborn right from the start. A decision she makes has her rushing off into a new world filled with danger. Readers can't help but want her to be able to succeed and maybe, just maybe, find her own love without the societal constraints forced on women of her world.

Rafe, the prince, was a character that didn't fit the cliche jilted royalty out to get revenge. I liked seeing his conflicts and struggles that begin with his first encounter until the last.

What I had issues with had to be the different POVs throughout. At times they were hard to follow. I really loved Lia and Rafe and wanted to see more of them.

Another problem I had was with Kaden. I really didn't feel the connection between him and Lia. Maybe it was because of who and what he really is( don't worry! No spoilers here!) I just had a hard time buying the love triangle. But that's just my opinion.

Otherwise, this is another must read for those who love high epic fantasies/romances with writing that sweeps you away into a whole different realm. The history, culture is lush in this world and readers won't be disappointed to be a part of Lia's journey.

What I Liked:
The fact that The Kiss of Deception is above par became apparent early on. The opening is common enough, with a princess running away from her arranged marriage, willing to marry only for the deepest love. Where this differs is in Lia’s attitude. She feels bad about leaving. Her emotions are complex and she does worry about her family. Not only that, but she continues to worry and wonder if she’s made the right choice even when her new life working in a tavern is going so well. Though she chooses to be without her family, she does so with a heavy heart and she never forgets them.

Much has been made of the love triangle aspect of The Kiss of Deception which is honestly a bit misleading. The way that the book is set up, with multiple points of view, does make it feel that way a bit, but Lia’s pretty consistent about where her romantic interests lie. Of course, you don’t actually know which guys she’s interested in, because Mary E. Pearson is a clever trickster. The romance didn’t enter major shipping levels for me, but I definitely do not think anyone should let the idea of a love triangle scare them away from this one.

My favorite aspect of The Kiss of Deception is Pearson’s storytelling. First of all, Pearson does an excellent job with the different first person perspectives. I was able to easily distinguish whose head I was in at any given point. Plus, she writes the story in such a way that you cannot tell for sure which guy is the prince and which the assassin. Though I knew Pearson was messing with me, I was left guessing and theorizing and totally obsessed with the book to find out who was who. This gambit was quite effective at keeping the pace fast and the mood tense. I could have done without a single chapter from Pauline’s POV, but I suppose if it’s important in later books, it makes sense to include now.

On top of that, I really do admire Lia’s character arc. From a pampered princess knowing little of the outside world, she becomes an incredibly strong woman. She always had the bones for it, of course: curiosity, intelligence and daring. Now, though, she finally has the freedom to figure out what she can really do. She goes through really intense situations and she always emerges stronger and more determined. I don’t generally believe that what doesn’t kill you really makes you stronger, but that definitely applies to Lia.

What Left Me Wanting More:
For what I didn’t like, that’s hard for me to really put my finger on. There’s a semi-spoilery plot with Lia’s best friend Pauline, which so far I do not care for in the least. The romance really should have been giving me some feels, but it really wasn’t. This could have been a side effect of not knowing who the guy really was, I suppose. Plot-wise, too, the novel’s pretty simple and not too much happens. That said, the stage is set for a truly epic and dark series, if the gruesomeness and death toll in The Kiss of Deception is any indicator.

The Final Verdict:
Mary E. Pearson’s The Kiss of Deception is a great start to a new fantasy series. Recommended for those who enjoy heroines strong in a way that’s more mental than physical or multiple points of view done well. I’m very much looking forward to the next installment, which will hopefully blow this one out of the water.

"The Kiss of Deception" is the story of Lia, a princess who has been betrothed for an alliance. The morning of her wedding, Lia runs away to a small township where she works as a barmaid. Both an assassin from a rival kingdom and the prince she was supposed to marry seek her out and fall in love with her.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Although advertised as fantasy, it is more of a YA romance complete with the requisite insta-love triangle. This is a formula that works, and I loved the way it was written here. It has some elements of fantasy, which really begin to increase towards the end of the book (when it really starts to get more exciting). By the end of the book, you see Lia grow from spoiled princess to princess pretending to be barmaid to woman shrouded in unfortunate circumstances, beginning to learn about the world and her place in it.

Although very predictable, I loved the romance and enjoyed Lia's journey. This is a must for fans of Sarah J. Maas and a lovely summer read!

If you’re a hopeless romantic like me who believes one should marry for love and not obligation, this book is definitely for you! Bless her heart, Lia is a princess born into a life of obligation. Rather than settle for the life laid out for her, on her wedding day she disobeys tradition for the sake of finding true love. She disguises herself... MY THOUGHTS
It's The Winner's Curse all over again. The Winner's Curse was an over-hyped book all over the blog world before it even came out! The Kiss of Deception had the same thing happen. ALL THE BLOGS were raving about this book! So I, of course, had extremely high expectations for this book! But having high expectations is a bad thing because it's very hard to reach those expectations, so you generally end up at least a little bit disappointed.
I was disappointed.
I don't know, I enjoyed this book, but I thought this would become a new favorite, but it didn't. I can't rave and gush about this book because, while I enjoyed it, that's basically it.

I did find this book extremely original, though, and for the first half, I thought I was going to be in the same boat as those other bloggers. The story has a majority point-of-view following Lia, but their are two other points-of-view. Two strangers meet her, at the same time, one of whom is The Prince, the other is The Assassin. You get their points-of-view from time to time, but you don't know who is who! I loved this part! It made me suspicious and screwed up my mind a bit, but I love it when authors do that! It's such an original idea and it flowed together! But, when the mystery is all figured out, I began to lose interest.

I don't know why. Maybe it's because my favorite aspect was done with, but I just wasn't as into the book. My main issue was just that I couldn't connect to any of the characters. They felt flat for some reason. Again, I don't know why. And I still liked the book, but I just wasn't enjoying it as much anymore.

IN CONCLUSION
This book is original and very unique, but beware of the hype-monster! My expectations for this book were much much higher than possible, so I was a bit disappointed. I do recommend this book, as I did enjoy it. It's great for fantasy fans and those who just want something different.

And I am definitely continuing the series!
