I have always been a big fan of the horror genre. While I tend to be the type that hides their eyes behind open fingers at the movie theater, I am a true horror fan when it comes to books. One thing that is for sure is that Kim Leggett doesn’t mess around when it comes to getting your blood pumping and turning up the adrenaline. This isn’t a keep you on the tip of your toes type of read. It is a dangle you off the top of a high-rise building by your toes type of read.
Set in rural Oklahoma, Clay, an 18 year who once had it all, is haunted by the death of his father and forced to care for his sister and mother. And haunted really isn’t the right word, he is tortured by the events surround his father’s death. That one night that his father took the living room crucifix off the wall and lost his mind killing cattle before taking his own life. Clay, one time Mr. Popular, finds himself an outcast and decides to focus on keeping the family farm alive. But on the one year anniversary of his father’s death- weird, unexplainable things begin to happen. Is Clay losing his mind like his dad?
What I love best: The Last Harvest keeps you guessing. Not only about the motivation of the characters, but makes you question what is real and what isn’t. Is Clay the sane one in the story? Or, is he, like his dad, completely crazy? Kim Liggett gives you a false sense of security and then hits it home with a surprising plot twist. What is even more impressive is that once you figured it all out- you realize that she had been hiding clues in plain sight. She sends you on one horror ride that is completely worth the wait.
The Last Harvest is a true horror novel and while fans of the supernatural will love this one. Remember it is not for the faint of heart. This read is definitely for older readers and those who are comfortable with gore and slasher fiction. Kim Liggett combines psychological and physical horror to perfection but might be too much for young readers.
As a reader of horror fiction this definitely ranks high on the list. Highly recommended.
