Its bad when your brothers friends describe you as neat; not cool neat, but neat neat, like not messy. And a good cook and a nice guy. It doesnt help you convert your best friend into your girlfriend. Its also bad when you get arrested for shoplifting&tidy whitey underwear. But thats Dylan Fontaine in a nutshell. Its time to make a change.
So, lets describe Dylan Fontaine. His mother recently left him, his brother Randy and his ob-gyn father, pretty much without warning. Since then, his fathers been spending most of his time at work. Randys been practicing with his band and smoking a lot of weed. Dylan takes care of the house, cooks, shops and goes to school. Dylans a good guitarist, but Randy is better. Dylan is a good basketball player, but Randy is better. Dylans a good artist but hasnt found his own style. Dylan loves his best friend Angie whos been going out with Jonathan and Dylan doesnt have the nerve to tell her. Stuck in a rut? I think so.
Even though theyre on the outs, when Angie asks Dylan help her make a short film to enter into a contest, he reluctantly agrees. When she decides that the film should be about him, he should star in it and Jonathan should assist (even though theyve broken up), that is the last straw. Dylan decides to break out of his shell.
What makes a good book? In my opinion, a good plot is essential. The Latent Powers of Dylan Fontaine has a good plot. Its about two teenagers reaction to their mother leaving and the pent up rage/frustration. Its about Dylan getting enough self confidence to emerge from Randys shadow and shine on his own. Its got romance, both Dylans and Randys. A good book has good characters. Youll like all these characters. Some of them have strange names like Moser and Headbone and the Nerd Posse. A good book has good underlying themes. This one has music and sports. A good book is well written and this book meets that test. Lurie describes the action and the surroundings in a way that you can visualize yourself in the midst of it all. And finally, a good book elicits emotion and despite the somewhat predictable ending, I could understand how each of the characters felt.
