When Frodo's elderly cousin Bilbo leaves the hobbit hole the two share after a birthday celebration Frodo finds himself the owner of the magical ring Bilbo won from Gollum, which turns the wearer invisible. Years pass, and Frodo is growing rather fond of the ring when Gandalf, a wizard who was once a friend of Bilbo and is now a friend of Frodo, arrives with grave news and commands Bilbo to take the ring to the House of Elrond, to Rivendell.
I very rarely admit this, but when I first read this book I hated it, but for some reason I have not yet worked out I read it again, and again, and again, until it grew on me like mold. When my parents got me a copy of it for my birthday last year I was so happy I nearly cried, and since then there has never been a day when I do not have a bookmark somewhere in Lord of the Rings.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone, and suggest you read it a few times through because it just gets better and better and better.
