I had never heard of the legend of Prince Madoc until reading The Lost Kingdom. Legend has it that long before Colombus "discovered" America, a Welsh prince came to the shores of North America. Rumors of Native Americans speaking Welsh and a lost kingdom of Welshman fueled searches. Nothing ever came of these searches. However in The Lost Kingdom, Matthew J. Kirkby creates an alternative history that takes place during the time right before the French and Indian War.

I love how Kirkby doesn't hesitate to rewrite history using parts of truth while he weaves a fascinating tale with steampunk style inventions, action, and intrigue. The adventure keeps you holding your breath while you turn the pages. On instance you are meeting Benjamin Franklin and the next turn you are discovering a flying sea ship and bear-wolfs. Kirkby creates solid characters and the relationship between Billy and his father feels authentic and genuine.

If you loved Kirby's other books, you will love The Lost Kingdom.
