“The Magical Moroccan Rug” by Naveed Mir takes readers on a fantastical journey through time. It all begins when Yusuf’s grandfather comes to visit. When Grandpa gives Yusuf a rug as a gift, Yusuf and his friend Jack can’t figure out what the importance of it is, if any. It seems like an old rug, nothing more. Before long, they discover that the rug is more than it seems, allowing them to travel through time to learn about topics they never dreamed possible.
It doesn’t hurt that Yusuf’s trip through time allows him to explore details about the question his teacher posed in regards to learning about something unique and possibly unknown in relation to flight. He can’t talk about the Wright brothers in his report, as they are more well-known in the world of flying, but he discovers so much about history before the Wright brothers were even born when he travels with Jack to the past.
The story provides a glimpse into the power of tradition, family, and curiosity, piquing the interest of readers who want to know what comes next.
