Written in whimsical verse, The Nest That Wren Built is a lovely journey through the process of building a nest to the protection of the nest, all the way to the hatchings that will leave the nest to start this process elsewhere and a small look at the animals that will call it home after then wrens have moved out.
The text has a lilting and lyrical cadence, drawn from The House That Jack Built. Fortunately, it is not written cumulative, so it doesn't get super long and wordy, like There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly.
The ink and colored pencil illustrations are soft detailed. Like others, I have found them akin to an old field guide. They are just lovely, I appreciate and am amazed at the amount of detail that is involved in showing the different types of materials the wrens use for their nest!
The backmatter includes a glossary with nature terms found throughout the story and fun facts about the hard work wrens put into creating the perfect home.
This book would make an outstanding addition to a study unit of birds (Wrens specifically) and perfect for spring time when all the birds are returning to your backyard!
