I recently reread the Princess Diaries, but it was just as good as before. Mia is a New York girl, 14, and a freshman in high school, particularly Albert Einstein High School. She's best friends with Lilly Moscovitz, who has a hot brother, Michael, and a weird boyfriend, Boris Pelkowski. She is also friends with Ling Su and Shameeka. In the awful movie adaptation, she is only friends with Lilly and there is certainly no Boris. Mia's love is Josh Richter (AKA Josh Bryant in the movie), who's love is Lana Weinburger. Lana is a big jerk and Josh is a big druggie. Then, her father shows up and explains that she is a princess. The nation is Genovia, a very small land in Europe. The princess lessons begin and change Mia drastically. Mia changes her hair, clothing, and adds makeup. This angers Lilly and suspends their friendship. Mia meets Tina Hakim-Baba and they become good friends. Both are alike, they have body guards and are outcasts. Suddenly, Mia's princess lessons teacher, the evil Grandmere, leaks to the press that Mia is a princess. Now Lana wants to be her friend, Josh wants to go with her to the cultural diversity dance. Everyone wants Mia and what does she do?
The Princess Diaries is true to life and really funny. You can read through the struggles and times of Mia in an instant. The Princess Diaries is a great read for girls 12 and up.
