Review Detail

THE ROAR is a fascinating, addictive journey that instantly captivated me. The writing is lovely, the characters are vivid, and the plot is non-stop. I could imagine the dark, damp, hopeless world the characters lived in, and I was desperate to understand what secret Mal Gorman and the rest of the politicians were keeping from the rest of the civilization. I think sci-fi, dystopian, and adventure lovers will really enjoy this book.

The main characters are twelve but feel much older (maybe sixteen? seventeen?) in their thoughts and actions. This didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story, especially because I decided the extreme nature of their existence must force them to grow up fast, but it's worth noting. The only real drawback for me came when the secret and the overall premise were revealed near the end of the book. I won't spoil it for other readers, but I found it hard to swallow. It didn't feel quite believable enough. However, the story is fascinating, and I will read the sequel. I have to know what happens next. :)
