I read this book about 4 friends who've grown up together and are now spending their first summer apart. They encounter 'magic' pants they decide to share through the mail over the summer - sounds lame, right? Yeah, okay, the pants part, kinda lame. It's not really about pants though. And it's not just for young adults. The girls are 16 in the book and while two of them do have their first real encounters with love and boys, the others, well, one has her word turned upside-down by an annoying younger girl who puts life in perspective - truly a wise and touching girl, and the other faces a change in her family structure that a lot of kids could relate to.

I like that the book seems to honestly portray the girls' trials and tribulations, though I do doubt how 'real' it would be for 16 year old girls today - at 16 first encountering love/boys? The girls are all, despite their shortcomings, good, all-American (even the puerta rican) girls who don't seem to get in a lot of trouble. I find it doubtful that the four different girls would have remained friends despite their VERY different interests, but I also can suspend my disbelief and enjoy that even if it's in a fictional world, friends can remain friends depite differences.
