He's looking at me like—well, like he wants to look at me. Like he likes what he sees, and he's smiling and his eyes are so blue, even in the faint flow of the porch light they shine, and I nod dumbly, blindly, and then grope for the door handle, telling myself to look away and yet not able to do it. "Sara," he says, softly, almost hesitantly, and my heart slam-bangs, beating hard, and this is what it's like to want someone you can't have. To want someone you shouldn't even be looking at.

Sarah and Brianna have always been friends, and it's always gone like this: guys talk to Sarah in order to get closer to Brianna. So even though Sarah met Ryan first, she's not surprised that he ends up with Brianna (even though Sarah has a massive crush on him).

The three of them hang out, and Sarah and Ryan's friendship grows until one night an innocent exchange between them leads to a moment that makes Sarah realize that Ryan might be interested in her after all. But if there's one unwritten rule, it's this: you don't mess around with a friend's boyfriend.

So Sarah tries to resist temptation. But with the three of them thrown together more and more, tension builds between Sarah and Ryan, and when they find themselves alone together at one point, they realize they just can't fight how they feel anymore....

I could not get enough of this book!
Good Points
I could not get enough of this book! I absolutely loved reading it. It felt extremely realistic, like something that could happen to me or someone I know. I loved that the writing was in first person, because I felt like I really got to know Sarah and her feelings.
I thought all of the characters were developed really well, and I enjoyed reading about them as well.

“I've been taught that love is beautiful and kind, but it isn't like that at all. It is beautiful, but it's a terrible beauty, a ruthless one, and you fall-you fall, and the thing is-the thing is you want to. You don't care what's coming you just want who your heart beats for.” -The Unwritten Rule

This above quote from the book pretty much sums up how Sarah and Ryan feel. I didn't really like Ryan some of the times, because he is pretty much cheating on his girlfriend. Just break up with her dude. But it was a great book about the struggles your heart puts you in.

I like the book cover! The book has its own way of telling some rules are better kept unwritten.
Good Points
Sarah and Brianna have been best friends for as long as they can remember. Things turn out differently between them, and they both fall for the same guy: Ryan. I didn’t care for Ryan at first because I thought he’s just another plain male character. However, I’m glad to know him better throughout the book. He’s definitely one of the characters to pay close attention to.

Sarah is the character I like most, not because I pity her or anything. She’s the only character I really relate to, and I feel like I’m with her all the time. What hurts her also hurts me because she’s been struggling to indulge her feelings toward Ryan in front of Brianna. Sarah doesn’t want to hurt her, and yet at the same time, can’t seem to get over the one boy they’ve both been wanting.

The Unwritten Rule is the kind of book I would start reading when I feel empty and alone. It’s definitely a perfect book for those who are looking for a light read about friendship, love, and a little bit of everything. Elizabeth Scott sure knows how to capture a teenage girl’s heart. She has created such unforgettable characters immediate makes me want to live in their world instead of mine.

Everyone knows the unwritten rule: You don't like your best friend's boyfriend.

Sarah has had a crush on Ryan for years. He's easy to talk to, supersmart, and totally gets her. Lately it even seems like he's paying extra attention to her. Everything would be perfect except for two things: Ryan is Brianna's boyfriend, and Brianna is Sarah's best friend.

Sarah forces herself to avoid Ryan and tries to convince herself not to like him. She feels so guilty for wanting him, and the last thing she wants is to hurt her best friend. But when she's thrown together with Ryan one night, something happens. It's wonderful...and awful.

Sarah is torn apart by guilt, but what she feels is nothing short of addiction, and she can't stop herself from wanting more.

My review

I liked this book it was a quick read but it did get me out of my reading slump, Brianna what can I say but she was one of those girl who like to hurt people to make her feel better about herself. Sarah she kind of annoyed me, I loved her for finally going after what she wanted but I would have felt better if she had stood up for herself a long time ago, I felt that brianna knew that sarah liked Ryan but she didn't want to see anyone happy because she wasn't happy. Other then that I enjoyed the book, I loved Sarah's parents, I wished they were my parents. There weren't any LOL in this book but it's a great read. I think that this book could be read by High School and forward.

This book is the story of a girl who fell in love with her best friend's boyfriend, but it's also about so much more than that.  It the story of best friends, and this truly unhealthy relationship they have.  I did enjoy the premise of the story, and the writers voice but that's about it.  Sarah has liked Ryan for years, but never says anything.  When Ryan and her BFF Brianna are suddenly together, Sarah can't get Ryan out of head, or her heart.  Brianna is really into Ryan, this is her first relationship that she's ever had last more than a week or two, and Sarah doesn't want to hurt her.  Should she follow her heart?

As for the characters, I loved Sarah's Mom and Dad, they were a lot of fun, and just great loving parents.  Brianna's Mom was horrid!  She was hateful and did nothing but think of herself and drive her daughter down.  I never did connect with the MC's.  Sarah was so insecure and naive, she thought Brianna was being a great friend even when she was cutting her down.  Brianna was just as horrid as her mother, just not as obviously so.  She was always making snide remarks about how Sarah wasn't good enough, how much better she was than her, how she'd never find a boyfriend (maybe she should find a freshman who doesn't know any better...).  I literally could not stand her, if I had known her in real life I would have knocked her out for treating people like that.  After never being loved by her parents, she is one of those girls who want attention from guys, thinking that will take the place of the love she craves, but she always dumps them before she would chance herself getting attached and possibly hurt.  I didn't connect with Ryan either, supposedly he always wanted Sarah, not Brianna, and yet it takes him 2 months to decide that he should let Brianna go?

I also felt like Sarah was always rambling on and on and on about how much she liked Ryan.  It was a lot of her whining and tagging along with Brianna and Ryan and not a lot really going on in the relationships.  Overall, this book just kinda feel flat for me.  I had really high hopes for it and I think it had really good premise, but I really just needed at least one character that I could connect with and root for, and it just didn't happen.

Elizabeth Scott has definately outdone herself. This book was fantastic! The plot was real, the ending was unpredictable and the characters were extremely lifelike! Brianna was written so well. You couldn't dislike her even when you wanted to because of what she'd been through. I know someone like her and I believe that Scott portrayed her beautifully in her role. You couldn't help but feel sympathetic for the main character, sarah and at the same time you were biting your nails to see how everything turned out. This book was a pageturner!
